2006 WSOP Player of the Year Jeff Madsen Leads After Day 1

Nível 5
Jeff Madsen - Chip leader
Jeff Madsen - Chip leader

Day 1 of the 2014 World Series of Poker $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship is in the books, and Jeff Madsen bagged the chip lead with 129,200 chips. Madsen won several pots during the final two levels of the evening, including an Omaha eight-or-better hand against Tony Cousineau where he scooped with Broadway. Madsen is a three-time WSOP bracelet winner, winning two of them and the Player of the Year Award in 2006. He added his third and final piece of hardware last summer.

Since capturing his third bracelet in 2013, Madsen has been on an absolute tear, reaching six final tables and winning four events.

Also among the chip leaders are bracelet winners Greg Mueller and Eric Rodawig. Mueller, who won two bracelets in 2009, bagged 121,400, and Rodawig, who bested Phil Hellmuth heads-up in the 2011 Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo Championship ended the day with 112,000.

There are also a handful of 2014 bracelet winners still in contention, including Dan Heimiller, who won the Seniors Championship moments before late registering this event, Tuan Le, and Brock Parker. Likewise, the aforementioned Hellmuth, Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, and Daniel Negreanu all advanced to Day 2.

More than a third of the field exited the tournament on Day 1, however, including Stephen Chidwick, Chris George, Matt Waxman, Vanessa Selbst, Scott Seiver, Matt Glantz, Maria Ho, and the defending champion, Tom Schneider. Monnette busted during the final level of the evening, getting the remainder of his stack in the middle with a draw against Alexander Kostritsyn’s made straight. The turn was no help to the 2013 bracelet winner, and he hit the rail.

A total of 200 players registered for this five-figure, mixed-game tournament, generating a total prize pool of $1,880,000. Out of the four, it is only the third-largest $10,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. tournament ever held at the WSOP, but the prize pool is 53% larger than the $5,000 variant held in 2013. The top 24 players are all guaranteed a minimum of $18,254, each member of the final table will earn at least $50,966, and the winner will pocket $507,614 along with the gold bracelet.

Play resumes on Monday at 2 p.m. in the Amazon Room, most likely over in the Tan Section. Be sure to return to PokerNews to catch all of the action as the 121 surviving players all battle for a spot at the final table.

You Can't Make a Wheel With A-6-7

Omaha 8

Mike Matusow just shared some gems with the player to his left, as he told Phil Hellmuth that it's impossible to make a wheel holding A-6-7.

The action started with a raise from Matusow and Hellmuth three-bet immediately from the button. The action folded back to Matusow who quickly called.

The flop brought out {4-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{2-Spades} and both players checked. On the turn the {5-Spades} hit and Matusow bet, Hellmuth called. The river was the {2-Diamonds} and Hellmuth called another bet.

Matusow announced, "wheel," and showed {A-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} while Hellmuth stared at his cards for a while before throwing them into the muck.

Matusow had seen Hellmuth's cards and yelled, "You can't make a wheel with A-6-7 Phill!"

"Mike is so funny," Hellmuth mumbled before saying, "You were a million miles behind!"

"Now I'm just going to take all your gifts Mike," Hellmuth continued.

Matusow's response couldn't have been any better, as he kindly rubbed Hellmuth's head, as the 13-time champ sulked.

Gordo's Guaranteed Scoop

Nível 3
Mike Gorodinsky (In a previous event) - Scoops
Mike Gorodinsky (In a previous event) - Scoops

Omaha 8

There was a raise and a reraise before Mike Gorodinsky tossed out 1,200 from the big blind, thinking he was only calling two bets. Gorodinsky quickly realized his mistake, but not after Zimnan Ziyard called on his left. The floor was called over, and they told Gorodinsky that he could keep the 1,200 in front of him or call the full 1,800. He chose to call, and he went to the flop with Ziyard, Joe Weinberger, and Matt Waxman.

"Guaranteed scoop for Gordo," Waxman said. "Congrats."

"If I scoop you guys with this hand..." Gorodinsky responded.

The dealer fanned {10-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{j-Spades}, and both Gorodinsky and Ziyard checked. Weinberger tossed out a bet, all three players called, and the turn was a third club - the {5-Clubs}.

The action checked to Weinberger again, he bet, and this time Waxman folded. Gorodinsky and Ziyard both called, and the trio all checked on the river ({4-Spades}).

Gorodinsky tabled {k-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} for a king-high flush and a six-low, fulfilling Waxman's guarantee.

Another Championship Event Set to Kick Off

2014 WSOP
2014 WSOP

Hello and welcome back to the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino for the 45th-annual World Series of Poker!

The $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship - the fifth championship - is set to kick off in 20 minutes or so, and we are anticipating another star-studded field. There was no $10,000 variant in 2013, the largest buy-in H.O.R.S.E. event was of the $5,000 variety, and Tom Schneider bested a 261-player field to earn $318,955.

Prior to that, David "Bakes" Baker (2012), Fabrice Soulier (2011), and Ian Gordon (2010) won this event. Before the WSOP changed the $50,000 Poker Players' Championship to eight-game, H.O.R.S.E. was the game of choice.

For those new to mixed games, H.O.R.S.E. is made up of the following:

  • Limit hold'em
  • Limit omaha hi-low eight-or-better
  • Razz
  • Stud hi
  • Stud hi-low eight-or-better

The cards will be in the air shortly. Be sure to check back for updates straight from the tournament room right here on PokerNews!
