Ladies Championship Day 2: The Money Bubble Is Looming

Liv Boeree
Liv Boeree

Welcome to Day 2 of the Ladies No-Limit Hold’em Championship. The tournament began when 954 ladies took their seats in the hopes of joining an elite club of gold bracelet winners. The dream remains alive for 122 of those women but the first goal of the day is to make the money. The tournament is paying 117 players, which means five unfortunate ladies will be leaving without a payday.

The field drew an impressive list of female notable players including: Vanessa Selbst, Vanessa Rousso, Kara Scott and Liv Boeree. From that list only Liv Boeree remains. Boeree has a healthy 44,600 as she continues her quest for victory. It is Chris Priday that leads the field with 96,200 and was responsible for eliminating Kara Scott on one of the last hands of evening when her aces held up against Scott’s ace king. Other notables to keep your eyes on are: Lauren Billings (74,600), Amanda Baker (56,200), Danielle Andersen (55,700) and Jackie Glazier (44,800).

The ladies return at 1 p.m. local time to the purple section of the Amazon Room for another ten levels of play. Stay with PokerNews for live updates from the tournament floor throughout the day. While you are waiting for the action to begin, get your latest poker news from Sara Grant who has your June 29th Update.

We approached the table as Liv Boeree was contemplating the all in from Christy Burt for her final 11,400. Boeree made the call and was behind heading to the flop.

Boeree: {a-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}
Burt: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}

The board fell {7-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{4-Spades}{3-Hearts} to keep Burt alive. This is not the start Boeree was looking for but the day is young.

The tournament director just announced hand-for-hand play when we heard Mandy Baker announce all in with a raise from Sally Boyer in front of her. Boyer, the 2007 champion of this event, isn't playing to just make the money, she is playing to win. She called the all in, for her final 17,900, and was ahead going to the flop.

Boyer: {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}
Baker: {4-Hearts}{4-Clubs}

The board ran out {2-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{k-Clubs} giving Boyer a set and a double up.

In the Money

Nível 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

After one more elimination while waiting for all tables to be ready to play hand-for-hand, the money bubble has burst without the need for hand-for-hand play.

The remaining 117 players are guaranteed a minimum payout of $1,631.

Bustouts Coming Quickly

Nível 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

After the money bubble, there has been a flurry of eliminations as relatively short-stacked players who made the money are now more willing to risk their chip stacks.

This elimination hand we just witnessed is typical of the last few minutes of play. Two players had each put in 3,000 preflop, and a third, Jane Strell, was all in for less. The flop fell {9-}{7-Clubs}{j-Clubs}, and Crystal Steele led out for 3,000. Lynne Beaumont folded, and the two remaining players turned up their hands:

Steele: {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}
Strell: {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}

The turn and river were the {4-Diamonds} and the {3-Diamonds}, and Strell was eliminated.

Flopped Quads

Nível 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

On a flop of {2-Spades}{2-Clubs}{4-Spades}, Cindy Kerslake checked, and Pam Buzzetto moved all in. Kerslake called instantly and turned over {2-Hearts}{2-Spades} for quads. Buzzetto showed {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} and would need running kings win the pot. They didn't come, and Kerslake doubled up.
