Ashby Leads Surviving 26 Players; Late Registration Extended to Day 2

Nível 10
Richard Ashby
Richard Ashby

The 2014 World Series of Poker APAC continued on Friday with the start of Event #8: $5,000 8-Game Mixed, the very tournament that Phil Ivey won last year to capture his ninth gold bracelet. This year’s tournament attracted 45 runners – down from 2013’s 91 – though that should go up as registration is open until the start of Day 2.

After 10 one-hour levels of play, just 26 players would make it through the night with Richard Ashby and his chip stack of 79,850 leading the way. Others making it through with big stacks were Bruno Portaro (52,925), Brandon Shack-Harris (51,175), and Dylan Honeyman (49,400).

Ashby, who late registered after Level 4, slowly built his stack throughout the evening, but had an especially good round of Omaha hi-lo in Level 9. After taking two decent pots from Jeff Madsen earlier in the orbit, Ashby opened his button to 1,000 and Rob Campbell defended the big blind.

Ashby continued for 500 on the {2-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{10-Spades} flop with Campbell check-raising to 1,000. Ashby called, and when Campbell bet 1,000 when the {Q-Spades} landed on the turn, Ashby raised. Campbell called, and then check-called another 1,000 when the river landed the {7-Hearts}.

Ashby tabled his {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{3-Clubs} for Broadway and Campbell mucked. With that, Ashby saw his stack climb to over 80,000 in chips.

Long before that, 2010 World Series of Poker Player of the Year Frank Kassela became the first elimination of the day. We missed the hand that crippled him, but we do know that he tried to run a bluff in no-limit hold'em against Bruno Portaro, who held two pair.

Not long after, Kassela got his last few chips all in on fourth street in razz against Mike Leah.

Kassela: {a-}{5-} / {3-}{8-}{q-}{9-} / {4-}
Leah: {3-}{4-} / {2-}{j-}{7-}{6-} / {7-}

"Why do I feel I'm drawing dead?" Kassela said even before fifth was dealt. Kassela was drawing live, but his bad omen came true as Leah made a seven-six low on sixth to leave Kassela drawing dead. With that, Kassela exited in Level 1 and became the day’s first elimination, though he wouldn’t be the last.

Others who fell on Day 1 were Vanessa Rousso, Dylan Hortin, Roland Israelashvili, Jackson Zheng, Rainer Quel, Sam Ngai, and Antonio Esfandairi, who fell in a hand of Omaha hi-lo to recent WSOP APAC bracelet winner Jeff Lisandro. The Australian Poker Hall of Famer would follow Esfandiari out the door a short time later though.

While some big names fell, plenty made it through to Day 2 including Mike Watson (39,875), Brian Rast (32,350), Daniel Negreanu (25,000), Joe Hachem (24,375), Dan Heimiller (15,350), Jonathan Duhamel (14,550), and George Danzer (9,525).

Registration is open up to the start of Day 2, which will begin at 12:30 p.m. local time on Saturday. The field is sure to pick up a few players, and once official numbers are determined we’ll be sure to bring you prize pool and payout information. Until then, goodnight from the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia.

Gray Gets Aces Cracked

Limit Holdem

While Bruno Portaro and Hassan Hanksson were involved in a hand, we noticed that the seat of Jason Gray was empty. Upon asking Oliver Gill, he pointed towards two AU$ 50 notes next to him and then wanted the pen and paper to write down what happened. Hanksson confirmed that he had paid the always talkative Gill to keep the mouth shut for a while and Gill accepted the offer.

Anyways, back to Gray. He opened from under the gun to 1,000 and called the three-bet to 1,500 by Bruno Portaro. On a {K-} {Q-} {10-} flop, Gray bet and Portaro called before the finalist of the AU$1,650 Dealer's Choice Event got the remainder of his stack in after a {10-} on the turn. Gray had pocket aces and Portaro flopped the straight with {A-Spades} {J-Spades}. The {2-} on the river was a blank and Gray was gone.

Meanwhile one table over, fellow Australian Hall of Famer Jeff Lisandro also ran out of chips and joined the rail.

Negreanu Sets Up on Gross

Nível 9
Jeff Gross
Jeff Gross

No-Limit Hold'em

Daniel Negreanu opened to 500 from under the gun and Jeff Gross three-bet to 1,300 in the cutoff. Negreanu called and then checked the {4-Spades}{2-Spades}{A-Hearts} flop to Gross who continued for 1,200.

Negreanu bumped it up to 3,000 and Gross called as the {Q-Hearts} landed on the turn and Negreanu bet out 5,000. Gross moved all in for 8,400 and Negreanu snap-called.

Gross: {A-Spades}{K-Spades}
Negreanu: {4-Hearts}{4-Clubs}

Needing to spike a spade to stay alive, the river landed the {3-Clubs} to unfortunately send Gross to the rail while Negreanu climbed to over 31,000 in chips.

2-7 Triple Draw

Catching the action with Jeff Madsen drawing two and both Stuart Rutter and Richard Ashby drawing one, Rutter bet his last 125 and both Madsen and Ashby called. All three players drew one and Madsen bet 800 and stood pat as his two opponents drew one.

Madsen bet and Ashby called with Madsen tabling {8-}{7-}{6-}{5-}{2-} before Ashby revealed his {8-}{7-}{5-}{4-}{3-} to scoop the pot.

Omaha Hi-Lo

Antonio Esfandiari moved all in for his last 275 from under the gun and Jeff Lisandro raised. Stuart Rutter called and the dealer spread a {10-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} flop with Lisandro betting out.

Rutter called, but when the turn landed the {10-Spades} and Lisandro fired again, the Brit released his hand.

Esfandiari: {5-Spades}{5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}
Lisandro: {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{6-Spades}

The river landed the {Q-Spades} and Esfandiari headed to the rail.

Rousso Done in by Honeyman

Pot-Limit Omaha

We missed the elimination of Vanessa Rousso, but the man that sent her packing, Dylan Honeyman, was kind enough to fill us in on what happened.

According to him, Rousso got her last 2,200 all in preflop holding {q-}{q-}{j-}{x-} and was up against his {10-}{9-}{8-}{7-}. The {8-}{5-}{4-} flop kept Rousso in the lead, and the {3-Spades} turn actually gave her a spade flush draw. Unfortunately for her, a non-spade {9-} spiked on the river to give Honeyman a winning two pair.

2010 WSOP Player of the Year the First to Go

Razz

We missed the hand that crippled 2010 World Series of Poker Player of the Year Frank Kassela, but according to Brandon Shack-Harris, who could very well become the 2014 WSOP Player of the Year, Kassela was crippled after he tried to run a bluff in no-limit hold'em. He bluffed into Bruno Portaro's two pair and couldn't shake the Aussie.

Not long after, Kassela got his last few chips all in on fourth street against Mike Leah in a hand of razz.

Kassela: {a-}{5-} / {3-}{8-}{q-}{9-} / {4-}
Leah: {3-}{4-} / {2-}{j-}{7-}{6-} / {7-}

"Why do I feel I'm drawing dead?" Kassela said even before fifth was dealt. Kassela wasn't drawing dead, but his bad omen came true as Leah made a seven-six low on sixth to leave Kassela drawing dead. With that, the 2010 WSOP Player of the Year become the first elimination of Event #8: $5,000 8-Game Mixed.

WSOP APAC Banner

Welcome back to the 2014 World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific. Today one of the most prestigious tournaments on the 10-event schedule will take place — Event #8: $5,000 8-Game Mixed. Last year this event attracted 91 entries and saw Phil Ivey emerge victorious to capture his ninth gold bracelet (he now has 10) and a AU$51,840 first-place prize.

Whether or not Ivey will return to defend his title remains to be seen. Ivey was originally schedule to be at the WSOP APAC, but certain obligations held him up in London all week. His business in the UK recently concluded, and now rumors are swirling that he may be headed to Melbourne. We'll have to wait and see if that proves true.

Some players that we do know are here and are expected to play today are current WSOP Player of the Year leader Brandon Shack-Harris; 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event champ Jonathan Duhamel; recent WSOP APAC bracelet winner Jeff Lisandro; Poker Hall of Famer Gary Benson; 2012 WSOP Champ and Player of the Year Greg Merson; and reigning WSOP APAC Main Event champ Daniel Negreanu.

Players will start with 15,000 in tournament chips, and the play for the day is to play 10 one-hour levels with a 15-minute break every two levels. There will be a one-hour dinner break after Level 6, and late registration will remain open for eight levels.

Cards will be in the air at 2:10 p.m. local time, which is a little over an hour from now. Join us then as we bring you all the 8-game action from the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia.
