Ensan Leads Final Table Of Eight at EPT Barcelona Main Event

Nível 32 : 80,000/160,000, 20,000 ante
Hossein Ensan

The penultimate day of action in the Main Event at the Casino Barcelona resumed today with 25 players across three tables. The plan was to play down to an official final table of eight before the close of play and that goal was reached just after 1 a.m. in the morning.

Hossein Ensan from Germany will be the man to beat tomorrow as he had gathered 10,300,000 chips to put him in pole position. Just behind him in second position is Samuel Phillips with 9,035,000 and Ji Zhang, another German player, lies in third with 6,480,000.

In contrast to with the hectic bust outs of yesterday there was more of a steady stream of exits as play got down to two tables by the middle of level 26 at which stage online qualifier Bram Haenraets from Holland, playing in reportedly his first live tournament, was top of the pile.

Just before the dinner break It was Samuel Phillips who topped the leader when he three-bet an unusually large open from Ji Zhang and called a shove holding {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}. If Phillips won that he would have had a huge lead over the rest of the field. Zhang showed him {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs} though and held to take the lead himself. That was the second time Zhang had aces and got full value.

At that time Hossein Ensan was in second and Dominik Panka was third placed thanks, in large part, to cracking Mikkel Nielsen’s {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}, turning a flush with {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}, and then beating Gerald Karlic’s {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs} with {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} hitting the {q-Spades} on the river. Panka’s Luck would eventually run out when he three-bet shoved with {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs} and got called by Andrey Shatilov holding {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} meaning Panka exited in 11th place for €77,600.

Once they reached the unofficial final table of nine there were a series of improbable double ups. First short stack Haenraets doubled up when he three-bet shoved eight big blinds with {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and beat Slaven Popov’s {k-Spades}{k-Hearts} on a final board of {9-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{10-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{10-Hearts}.It was then short stack Popov who beat Andrey Shatilov’s {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades} with {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs} spiking the ace on the flop.

As the blinds climbed steadily higher flops were few and far between as it became a series of preflop shoves or uncontested raises. Finally it fell to qualifier Haenraets to be the official final table bubble boy. He jammed {a-Spades}{10-Hearts} over an open from Hossein Ensan who had {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} and the fairy tale for the qualifier was ended with a consolation prize of €92,800.

It was a thoroughly entertaining day of poker filled with remarkable comebacks, tenacity and stoicism. First place is within the grasp of any of the final eight and they will have trouble sleeping knowing they are so close to claiming the enormous first place prize of €121,300 and the glory of being crowned EPT Barcelona Champion 2014.

Play resumes tomorrow at 1 p.m. but coverage will be brought to you one hour later as the final table is on a delayed stream with hole cards so you can see exactly what strategy each player is employing.

Bram Haenraets Eliminated in 9th Place (€92,800)

Hossein Ensan opened for 325,000 and for the third time this level Bram Haenraets shoved all in, this time for 3,080,000. Back to Ensan who snapped him off.

Haenraets tabled {a-Spades}{10-Hearts} and this time he had run into the {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} of Ensan. There had been plenty of extraordinary come from behind poker hands today and it would need to happen one more time if the qualifier Haenraets was to survive.

The final board {7-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{7-Clubs} did not see the aces cracked and with that Haenraets was out and the official final table of eight was set and play came to a close for the day.

Phillips Takes Chip Lead

Nível 31 : 60,000/120,000, 20,000 ante
Samuel Phillips
Samuel Phillips

Samuel Phillips opened to 250,000 preflop in middle position, Kiryl Radzivonau then three-bet to 625,0000 behind him and Phillips made the call.

The flop came {9-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} and Phillips checked, Radzivonau bet 500,000 and Phillips made the call. The turn was the {K-Hearts} and Phillips checked again, Radzivonau then bet 900,0000 and Phillips responded by moving all in.

Radzivonau was shocked and almost jumped up out of his chair. He tanked for several minutes, clearly having a very tough decision. Finally, with the clock ticking into the break, the Belarussian folded his hand.

Phillips is the new chip leader.

Mikhail Rudoy - 10th Place

Mikhail Rudoy moved all in from the button for 1,795,000 and was snapped off by big blind and chip leader Hossein Ensan.

The cards were on their backs and Rudoy was out of his seat with his {k-Hearts}{q-Clubs} in front of him. Ensan had made a good call with {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs}. He needed to stay in front to reduce the runners to the unofficial final table of nine.

The cards ran out {2-Clubs}{4-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}.

Rudoy couldn’t hit and he was out as more chips were added to Ensan’s stack.

Dominik Panka three-bet shoved for 2,480,000 and got a call from Andrey Shatilov .

Panka put it on the line with {a-Clubs}{9-Clubs} and was looking down the barrel of {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} in front of Shatilov.

The final board read {2-Spades}{7-Hearts}{7-Spades}{k-Spades}{3-Diamonds} and Panka was knocked out.

Pawel Brzeski Eliminated In 12th Place (€77,600)

Bram Haenraets was the last man to call his chips off in a three way all in that also involved Pawel Brzeski and Kiryl Radzivonau.

Brzeski was the short stack with {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}, Haenraets held {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} but the best starting hand in poker belonged to Radzivonau with {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}.

The cards ran out {a-Spades}{9-Clubs}{q-Spades}{j-Spades}{4-Clubs} and despite a straight draw on the turn for Haenraets it was Brzeski who was out and Radzivonau who scooped the lot.

Hossein Ensan was in the small blind and Robert Schulz was in the big blind when they clashed all in preflop with Schultz the player at risk.

Ensan had the {a-Spades}{10-Spades} and Schulz tabled {7-Diamonds}{7-Spades}.

The final board read {4-Hearts}{j-Spades}{k-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{k-Clubs} with the turn card spelling doom for Schulz.

Radzivonau Gets Short-Changed

Nível 28 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
Kiryl Radzivonau
Kiryl Radzivonau

In the last hand before the break, Andrea Dato opened to 155,000 preflop and it was passed to Kiryl Radzivonau who made it 315,000. Dato responded by four-betting to 630,000 and Radzivonau moved all in. Dato quickly called.

Dato: {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}
Radzivonau: {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}

The board came {3-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{2-Hearts} and the Russian doubled up. Dato passed over the chips then left the table and Radzivonau began to stack them as they went on a break.

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team and Radzivonau both then noticed that he was short a full double-up. The all-in had been announced as 2,690,000 but Radzivonau only had 5,040,000. Counting the blinds and antes, the Russian should have 5,540,000 and was clearly 500,000 short.

The floor staff are currently checking the cameras but it does appear as though Dato did not give enough chips and the dealer miscounted what Radzivonau should've received. Since Dato is not at the table, they are waiting until the Italian returns before reviewing the situation.

Piotr Sowinski Eliminated in 15th Place (€62,000)

Piotr Sowinski

On the turn of a {9-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{10-Hearts} board, Piotr Sowinski moved all in for his last 335,000 or so and Andrey Shatilov made the call,

Sowinski: {7-Hearts}{2-Hearts}
Shatilov: {A-Hearts}{6-Hearts}

Both had flush draws but Shatilov's was higher, Sowinski needed a seven or a deuce to survive. The river was {Q-Spades} and Shatilov's ace-high was still good. Just 14 players remain.
