Jose Lamarca Capa Leads Gigantic Field into Day 2

Nível 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Jose Lamarca Capa
Jose Lamarca Capa

Records are made to be broken, and the players who entered Day 1b of European Poker Tour Barcelona Main Event were knee-deep in shattered vinyl. Over 1,000 players entered the final starting day of this event, the 100th EPT event ever held, and not a table in the tournament area was spared with an empty seat for much of the day.

Adding the 1,010 runners to the 475 who played yesterday, meant the field grew to 1,485 at the completion of play last night. With registration open until the start of play on Day 2, things could get even larger. The tournament already contains a bigger field than any EPT event on European soil and overall is currently only eclipsed by the PokerStars Carribean Adventure main events in Season 6 and Season 7, which drew 1,529 and 1,560 runners, respectively. Even if the final number fails to beat these, it'll still be the third biggest tournament in the EPT's 10-year history.

Of course, the question you should be asking is who is currently leading this mammoth field? Well, after eight 75-minute levels, it is Jose Lamarca Capa who is top of the pile at this point in time. Capa, who qualified through a live satellite, finished the day delighted with 193,300 in chips, which put him as the chip leader not just of Day 1b, but overall as well, pushing Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi into second.

With a field of this size, there were numerous Team PokerStars Pros who made it through the day with sizeable stacks and they were led by Theo Jorgensen, who finished up with 116,500 thanks in part to a huge pot where he made a full house at the same time another player made trips. Others to make it through included Jake Cody (57,900), Ivan Demidov (52,900), Marcin Horecki (47,300) Joao Nunes (34,900), Liv Boeree (27,400), Andre Akkari (20,100), and Daniel Negreanu (18,600).

Some of the other Team PokerStars didn't fair so well and were eliminated today. Those included Jason Mercier, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Fatima Moreira de Melo, Luca Pagano, George Danzer, and Friend of PokerStars Natalie Hof. Danzer, currently looking to secure the World Series of Poker Player of the Year title, suffered from a mistimed squeeze play when he pushed all in with the {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds} but ran into the {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} and the {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} — running into the "top of their ranges."

Other players to make it through included Timur Margolin (166,175), Timo Pfutzenreuter (163,600), Vojech Ruzicka (155,300), Davidi Kitai (93,200), Mike McDonald (76,800), David Peters (75,800), Dan Smith (45,600), Pius Heinz (21,500), and Sofia Lovgren (16,200).

The long list of casualties included November Niners, WSOP Europe champions, and former EPT winners, as Jorryt van Hoof, Annette Obrestad, Michael Tureniec, Zimnan Ziyard, Pieter de Korver, and Steve O'Dwyer were all felled during the day.

Tomorrow we believe there will be around a thousand players returning for Day 2, how the EPT plans to accommodate such a large remaining field is open to debate, but no doubt they'll be pulling out all the stops to make sure everyone is able to fit in for what should be an incredibly fast and hectic day.

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be back from 12 p.m. local time tomorrow as this huge tournament continues, so be sure to tune back in then for more coverage.

While you wait, check out the following video of Negreanu discussing the recent debate he's been involved in as to whether or not he'd be able to win playing $25/$50 no-limit hold'em cash games online:

Joao Nunes and Bud Downes Take Down the Takedown With Style

It was an event about skill, about luck, about intrigue, even sabotage (maybe, probably not). Whatever it was, this was competition at its fiercest, and with a few laughs thrown in along the way. Using a unique combination of elements we saw poker skills combined with imagination, and even nautical know-how. This could only be the EPT100 Takedown. Check it out on the PokerStars Blog.

De Korver and Grafton Sent Home

Nível 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Sam Grafton
Sam Grafton

EPT Monte Carlo champion Pieter de Korver and Sam Grafton have been eliminated from the tournament. Both their seats were empty.

A former table mate of De Korver told us that the Dutchman had shoved blind for his remaining ten big blinds from the small blind. The big blind made the call with {K-}{2-} and was ahead of De Korver's {9-}{3-} off suit. De Korver didn't improve and left the tournament.

Sam Grafton's former table mates were a bit more vague about the bust out that had happened. Though a story of an open, call from Jamilla von Perger and an over call from Grafton was started, and we heard something about a check jam on {9-}{7-}{2-}, soon the table agreed that we just had to write that it was a spewy move that ended Grafton's tournament. "As long as you add a smiley" they laughed.

So here we go:

"He fired three streets and I called him down with jack-high" we heard, but we all take that with a grain of salt. Just one thing is sure: Grafton is no longer active in the tournament.

Over 1,000 Players On Day 1b

Nível 7 : 250/500, 50 ante

It's a little early to be walking around the tournament rooms and see the yellow T25,000 chips in play, but that's what's going on here in Barcelona. The reason is that the field is simply too big on Day 1b and it is needed to conserve other chips to put into play with new players. There are 70 yellow T25,000 chips in play right now.

The field has grown to 1,009 entrants on Day 1b, and it's still growing with more and more alternates taking to the felt by the minute. This is now by far the largest European Poker Tour main event on European soil, and it could still become the largest EPT event ever.

When you add today's field with the 475 players from Day 1a, the current total is 1,484 players. Only two events have been larger — the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event in Season 7 and Season 6 with 1,560 entrants and 1,529 entrants, respectively.

Here's a look at the current top 10 EPT main events ever:

Mercier Eliminated

Nível 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier has been eliminated, he pushed all in preflop with {A-Hearts}{J-Clubs} and PokerStars qualifier Timur Margolin made the call on the buton with {Q-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}.

The board came {9-Spades}{6-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} and Mercier's two pair were not as good as Margolin's. The American wished everyone good luck and then departed for the rail.

Jorryt van Hoof Eliminated

Nível 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Jorryt van Hoof
Jorryt van Hoof

The 2014 World Series of Poker Main Event's current chip leader Jorryt van Hoof has been eliminated just now. Van Hoof walked into the press room and told us the details of his bust out.

After a raise and call, Van Hoof shoved all in with {A-}{K-} for his remaining 5,000. The initial raiser folded, but the flat caller did call.

Van Hoof got called by {A-}{J-}, and that gentleman hit an {J-} on the flop. Van Hoof didn't recover on the turn or river, and was sent home.

EPT Copenhagen winner Michael Tureniec has also been eliminated, but we don't have details of his bust out unfortunately.

Fatima Moreira de Melo has just been crippled. She lost the classic 57-43 race with {Q-}{Q-} against Niko Soininen's {A-}{K-} when the board came {10-Spades}{J-Spades}{2-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}.

The Team PokerStars SportStar was knocked down to just 1,500 as a result of losing the pot worth 45,000 and was eliminated a few hands later.

Misclick Turns Bad for De Meulder's Opponent

Nível 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Matthias De Meulder
Matthias De Meulder

Matthias De Meulder is one of the players seated in the much smaller Tournament Room B. He was up to 60,000 early on, and still hovers around that stack. De Meulder got up from the table and told us the details of the hand he doubled in at the beginning of the day.

The player in the cut off made a raise to 400 in the 75/150 level, and with {A-}{J-} off suit De Meulder called on the button. The player in the big blind wanted to call by throwing in four 100 chips, but made a mistake and had three 100 and one 500 chip, which was declared a raise to 800.

De cut off made the call, which told De Meulder that he had the best hand at that point. De Meulder re squeezed to 2,800 and the big blind made the call, the cut off now folded.

The flop brought {J-}{8-}{3-} and the big blind checked. De Meulder bet 3,200 and the big blind made the call. The turn brought the {5-Spades} to the table and the big blind checked. De Meulder now bet 5,800 and the big blind shoved for 23,000 total.

De Meulder laughed that that gave him a headache, but after some minutes of tanking, the Belgian Team Pro made the call.

De Meulder was up against {A-Spades}{9-Spades} and his hand helt after the {9-Clubs} hit the river.
