Xhavit Berisha Among Top Chip Counts in Day 1e

Nível 18 : Blinds 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Xhavit Berisha

It took almost 18 full levels of play for Day 1e of the 2022 PokerStars EPT Barcelona Estrellas Poker Tour €1,100 to reach its conclusion, however it only took 11 hours of play due to the 30-minute blind structure. The fifth of six starting flights drew the largest crowd with 1,735 total entrants with play to follow the previous flights’ schedule and play down to 15 percent. The magic number for today was 260 and was reached with 00:44 remaining in Level 18 (4,000/8,000/8,000).

Play was loaded with action due to the turbo blind structure and didn't even seem to slow down near the bubble as it only took one time stoppage to burst, the complete opposite of last night’s two-hour bubble. Several large stacks were visible throughout the room and it seemed as if there could be any one of a handful of players to emerge atop the counts when chips went into bags. However, it was Anthony Barrera who ultimately claimed that title after finishing the day with 860,000.

Hot on his heels were Rino Carolei (800,000), Loic De Doncker (771,000), Xhavit Berisha (761,000) and rounding out the top five is Laurent Cessy with 677,000. There were many other players over the half-million mark and the average chip stack on the day was 204,000.

Other notables to advance included Oren Rosen (372,000), Kenny Hallaert (359,000), and 2017 EPT Main Event Champion Sebastian Sorensson (196,000).

Many other players were not as fortunate on the day, and with the tournament only allowing two entries per flight, those players found themselves out of luck for this tournament as there were no more entries available. Among those who had to try again next year were PokerStars Ambassador Alejandro Lococo, Damian Salas, EPT High Roller winner Robert Cowen, and Jonathan Therme.

Only flight Day 1f remains, with its play still in progress and is projected to finish around 2 a.m. local time. Day 2 starts at noon local time on Friday where all flights will combine into one big field to play until a winner is crowned at the end of Day 4.

Zak Lawson raised to 3,000 from under the gun and was called by Renan Mesqueu Monteiro, Julien Sitbon, and big blind Samatar Gelle.

The flop came {q-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{7-Spades} and action checked to Sitbon who bet 4,500, with only Lawson calling.

Lawson led out for 8,500 on the {a-Diamonds} turn and Sitbon took a piece of his massive stack and put it in the middle.

The river was the {10-Hearts} and Lawson moved all in for 20,700, sending Sitbon into the tank. Another player eventually called the clock, and Sitbon called.

Lawson showed {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts} for a turned pair of aces as Sitbon flashed {q-}{j-} before mucking.

Krzysztof Dulowski opened to 1,600 from the hijack and Thomas Rauhut flat-called on the button. Pierre Mounic then three-bet to 3,600 from the big blind and both opponents called.

The flop landed {2-Spades}{8-Hearts}{6-Spades} and all three players checked. Mounic bet 3,900 on the {5-Diamonds} turn and Dulowski raised to 11,100. Rauhut folded and Mounic called.

The river brought the {10-Diamonds} and Mounic led out for 13,500. Dulowski moved all in for 21,800 and Mounic called. Dulowski tabled {5-Spades}{5-Hearts} for a turned to win the pot as Mounic was forced to show {a-Spades}{10-Spades} for a rivered top pair.

Shortly after at a nearby table, two-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner Robert Cowen was seen leaving the tournament area after being eliminated.

EPT Barcelona Tournament Room

With another starting flight to go, the €1,100 Estrellas Poker Tour Main Event here at EPT Barcelona has already drawn a record-breaking field.

The previous record was set in 2019 at the €1,100 EPT National, which drew a massive field of 4,682. As of the start of Level 5 on Day 1e, this year's Estrellas Poker Tour Main Event has already surpassed that with 4,805 entrants so far. That number is sure to climb with Day 1f still to come later this evening.

Chiriac Holds On to Take Out Zhang

Ji Zhang
Ji Zhang

With around 5,000 in the pot, George Chiriac bet 2,000 from the small blind on a flop of {2-Hearts}{10-Spades}{4-Hearts} before Ji Zhang raised to 5,000 from early position.

Chiriac asked to see Zhang's remaining stack, which consisted of two blue 5,000 chips, before re-raising to 15,000. Zhang quickly threw in his last two chips.

Ji Zhang: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}
George Chiriac: {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}

Chiriac was ahead with his pair of nines but needed to fade Zhang's overcards and nut flush draw. The {j-Diamonds} on the turn gave Zhang more outs to a straight, but he couldn't connect with the {6-Spades} river and was sent to the exit.
