Conor Beresford Takes Day 1 Chip Lead at €2,200 EPT National High Roller

Nível 17 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Conor Beresford
Conor Beresford

Day 1 of the 2019 PokerStars EPT Prague €2,200 EPT National High Roller saw nearly 18 full levels come and go with 970 entries tallied to generate a total prize pool of €1,862,400. The field was set to play down to 15% in order to make the money, and that number for the hard stop was determined to be when 143 players remained.

When the magic number was reached, Conor Beresford led the way with a stack of 769,000.

Beresford was seen with one of the largest stacks in the room as the day turned to night, eclipsing the half-million mark about three hours before play finished. He continued to climb from there, hitting a high mark of 980,000 at one point after a double knockout, before losing a bit back to finish the day at his resting total.

As for the happenings through the day, players such as Dietrich Fast (508,000), Sam Grafton (451,000), Julien Martini (256,000), Kristin Bicknell (159,000) and Viktor Blom (86,000) all found their ways into Day 2.

Defending champion Yaniv Peretz and PokerStars Ambassadors Fatima Moreira de Melo, Kalidou Sow, and Ramon Colillas were just a few of those to have not made it through the day’s action. Fabrice Soulier also did not advance after his aces were cracked by Bjorn Kozenkai’s king-jack suited in an all-in preflop situation. Kozenkai flopped the nut flush when the flop came ace-high with all clubs, also giving Soulier top set. However, he was unable to improve from there and found himself eliminated from the tournament shortly before the end of the night.

The bubble then loomed near, and hand-for-hand play was called with two eliminations needed to end the night in order to stop rampant stalling that began to occur. A few hands went by with several doubles, with one of which occurring when Claudio Lucchini shoved pocket queens into Simon Brandstrom’s pocket tens. Lucchini held and Brandstrom found himself with just a couple of big blinds.

A few hands later, Brandstrom got all in with king-jack suited and lost to Vladimir Bozinovic’s jack-seven when a seven hit on the turn. Meanwhile, another all-in situation arose at an adjacent table on the same hand. Per Backlund opened from the hijack and called off the rest of his chips when Jose Quintas shoved over him from the button. Backlund had pocket kings and was unable to hold against Quintas’ jack-nine suited after Quintas flopped a nine and backed into a flush, resulting in 145 players becoming 143 in one hand to end the night with eight minutes remaining on the clock in Level 18 (3,000/6,000/6,000).

The 143 to advance will come back Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. local time to get back at it at the felt, with the play scheduled to continue until a winner has been declared. All who return will have locked up a first-level payout of €3,465 with a full day’s journey ahead between that and the €342,810 that is up top.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be on hand for the entirety of the tournament, so make sure to come back and see who reigns supreme.

Brand and Backlund Become Bubble Boys

Nível 17 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Per Backlund
Per Backlund

Two simultaneous all-in preflop situations arose with Simon Brandstrom all in for the last of his chips having received action from Vladimir Bozinovic on one table, while Per Backlund raised to 12,000 in the hijack and called off the rest of his chips when Jose Quintas shoved over the top of him from the button.

Hand #1:

Jose Quintas: {j-Clubs}{9-Clubs}
Per Backlund: {k-}{k-}

The board ran out {9-}{10-Clubs}{5-}{4-Clubs}{5-Clubs} to give Quintas a flush on the river, cracking Backlund's kings to eliminate him from the tournament.

Hand #2:

Simon Brandstrom: {k-Hearts}{j-Hearts}
Vladimir Bozinovic: {j-Clubs}{7-Spades}

The board ran out {a-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} to give Bozinovic a pair of sevens on the turn to eliminate him at the same time as Backlund. The double-elimination brought the field from 145 down to 143, the exact number needed for play to end on the night as the tournament has officially reached the money.

Soulier's Aces Cracked To Bust

Nível 17 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Fabrice Soulier
Fabrice Soulier

Fabrice Soulier had opened preflop from the cutoff and was three-bet all in by Bjorn Kozenkai in the big blind. Soulier quickly called.

Fabrice Soulier: {a-Hearts}{a-Spades}
Bjorn Kozenkai: {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}

Soulier was way out in front until the flop came {2-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{8-Clubs}, giving Kozenkai the nut flush. However, Soulier's top set meant he had outs at the board pairing to stay alive. Unfortunately for him, the turn {7-Clubs} and river {5-Spades} didn't do the trick and he was eliminated from the tournament just a few places before reaching the money.

Blom Builds Before Break, Busts Gomez Zapatero

Nível 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Viktor Blom
Viktor Blom

Viktor Blom was under the gun and raised to 3,200. He saw action fold around to Javier Gomez Zapatero in the small blind, who went all in for around 20 big blinds. Blom looked back at his cards and dropped a stack of chips onto the felt in front of him to call.

Javier Gomez Zapatero: {7-Spades}{7-Hearts}
Viktor Blom: {9-Hearts}{9-Spades}

Blom had Gomez Zapatero drawing dead on the turn as the board came {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{8-Spades}{4-Hearts}, resulting in Blom adding a chunk to his already-increasing stack before what is likely the penultimate break of the evening.

Tsai Over 200,000 After Scoring Knockout

Nível 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Ting-Yi Tsai
Ting-Yi Tsai

Julien Martini opened the action with a raise to 3,600 from early position. Ole Olsen called from middle position and action went around to Georgios Karakousis, who called from the small blind. Ting Yi Tsai then defended his big blind and action went four ways to the flop {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{2-Spades}.

Karakousis and Tsai checked to Martini, who made a continuation-bet of 6,000. Olsen called to put action onto Karakousis, who check-raised all in. Tsai asked for a count and it was totaled to be 30,100, and he then announced a raise of the minimum on top of Karakousis' all-in check-raise. Martini and Olsen let their hands go.

Georgios Karakousis: {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}
Ting Yi Tsai: {a-Spades}{2-Hearts}

Tsai had top-and-bottom pairs and needed to hold against Karkousis' flush draw in order to win all the chips. The runout did indeed come in his favor, with the turn {4-Spades} and river {9-Diamonds} leaving Karakousis empty on his draw to result in his elimination from the tournament.

Bicknell Hits One of "A Lot of Outs" To Double

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Kristen Bicknell
Kristen Bicknell

Simon Persson saw action folded to him on the button and opened to 2,500, putting action onto Kristen Bicknell in the small blind. Bicknell sat still for about 35 seconds and then announced she was all in. Persson saw action back upon him shortly thereafter and went thought about his decision for about 20 seconds before announcing a call.

Kristen Bicknell: {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts}
Simon Persson: {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds}

Bicknell was in a coin flip situation for her tournament life before the runout as the flop came {9-Spades}{k-Hearts}{6-Hearts}, giving her a gutshot straight draw and flush draw to go along with her two overcards. The turn {3-Spades} cut her opportunities at a double in half, but the river {10-Diamonds} gave her a straight, filling her up to the best hand and earning her the double.

"A lot of outs!" said Bicknell as she raked in the pot.

Colillas Puts Pressure on Lehoussine

Nível 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Leo Margets - Ramon Colillas
Leo Margets - Ramon Colillas

The complete {6-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{4-Spades}{7-Clubs}{4-Hearts} board was on the table when Karim Lehoussine checked from the big blind to Ramon Colillas on the button. The Spanish PokerStars Ambassador and winner of the 2018 PSPC put all his chips in front of him and effectively put his opponent all in for 25,200. The pot had about 25,000 in it and there was plenty to play for.

Lehoussine didn't seem to have an easy decision and he tanked for multiple minutes before Leo Margets called the clock on him. A floorman arrived and explained he had thirty seconds to make his decision but Lehoussine ended up folding after a couple of seconds.

Welcome To Day 1 of the 2019 PokerStars EPT Prague €2,200 EPT National High Roller

Yaniv Peretz at 2018 PokerStars EPT Prague
Yaniv Peretz at 2018 PokerStars EPT Prague

The 2019 PokerStars EPT Prague festival is in full stride and another day of fun is sure to ensue with the €2,200 EPT National High Roller set to kick off at 12:30 p.m. local time.

Last year’s edition of the event saw a massive 954 entries, greater than a 50 percent increase from the figure of 624 from 2017. Another big field is expected to show up to the Hilton Prague for the 2019 version as field sizes this year have been as large as expected. Last year’s champion Yaniv Peretz has been seen in the venue in 2019, having already taken a couple of shots at the €1,100 EPT National event that is still underway. He is likely to be a visible player inside the tournament room, defending his title from last year's victory that earned him €253,965.

Like last year, players will receive 30,000 in chips to start the day with blinds beginning at 100/100 and escalating until 15 percent of the field is reached, which will be both the time the tournament reaches the money as well as when play will end for the night. Levels last 40 minutes in length with 20-minute breaks after every three levels and a 75-minute dinner break after Level 8. Registration is also open until the end of Level 8, and players are allowed one reentry into the tournament should they find themselves out of chips.
