David Peters Retains the Lead After Day 3 With 45 Players Remaining

David Peters still in the top spot in Monte-Carlo
David Peters still in the top spot in Monte-Carlo

The money bubble has burst on Day 3 of the 2018 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo©Casino €5,300 EPT Main Event and after almost five full levels of 90 minutes each, it was a very familiar name at the top of the counts with 45 players still in contention. David Peters held the top spot when the cards got in the air, and he remained right there at the end of level 18.

Peters bagged up 1,839,000, one of seven players to claim at least one million in chips to their name at the end of Day 3. Second in chips is Javier Fernandez Alonso with 1,650,000 closely followed by Austria's Josip Simunic with 1,547,000. Among the other chip millionaires are Day 1a chip leader Mark Demirdjian (1,190,000), Tomas Jozonis (1,141,000), Triple Crown Champion Davidi Kitai (1,026,000) and Gary Miller (1,020,000).

Three further former EPT Champions are in the hunt to become the second-ever player to win two Main Event titles of the popular live series: Patrik Antonius (778,000), Dimitar Danchev (753,000) and Adrian Mateos (614,000). After the bubble had burst, Mateos was down to a mere 15,000 before mounting an incredible comeback.

Adrian Mateos

Other notables in a field filled with the who is who of the European and international poker circuit are Ole Schemion (714,000), Stefan Huber (449,000), two-time WSOP Main Event finalist Antoine Saout (329,000), Philipp Gruissem (284,000), Team PokerStars Pro Andre Akkari (218,000) and Maxim Panyak (173,000).

Two former EPT champions took home a share of the €3,768,450 prize pool in Hossein Ensan (80th for €10,300) and Mark Teltscher (48th for €13,600), while other notables to bust in the money on Day 3 included Ryan Riess, Erik Seidel, Leo Margets, Jack Salter, PokerStars Team Pro Randy Lew,Jason Wheeler, Sam Greenwood, Rainer Kempe, Nick Petrangelo and Day 1b chip leader Ali Reza Fatehi.

Among those to miss out on the min cash of €9,400 were such big names as [Removed:17], Pete Chan and Emil Patel. Yan was the first to fall, losing a flip Javier Fernandez Alonso, while Patel was one of two players to send over their stack to Philipp Gruissem in quick succession.

Three players were all in and at risk at different tables, but only Sosia Jiang departed when her pocket kings ended up second-best to the pocket aces of Fernandez Alonso. The money bubble then burst in the second level of the day and it was Jean-Jacques Zeitoun who became the last casualty without anything to show for. Down to fewer than four big blinds, Zeitoun was all in with pocket jacks and Sam Greenwood called with ace-eight to spike an ace on the flop to secure all remaining 111 players a min-cash of €9,400.

Jean-Jacques Zeitoun

The floodgates opened soon after with several of the shorter stacks joining the rail in quick succession. Two big clashes vaulted Peters and Simunic to the top of the counts and both times it involved pocket kings and pocket aces. Peters benefited from a three-way all in with aces against the kings of Team PokerStars Pro Randy Lew and the queens of Lukasz Cygan, while big stack Mazin Khoury ran with his kings into the only better pair of EPT11 Deauville €10,300 High Roller champion Simunic.

Hossein Ensan's bid for a second EPT title came to an end when his pocket jacks failed to get there against the pocket kings of Alexis Fleur. National Championship €1,100 Main Event runner-up Federico Petruzzelli, who missed out on a Platinum Pass twice during the festival so far, scored a big double through Pablo Melogno with flush versus straight before his set of sixes ran into the set of aces of Dimitar Danchev. Petruzzelli (pictured below) roared back after winning a flip against Nick Petrangelo, though, and has another shot at the free trip to the Bahamas.

Federico Petruzzelli

In the last level of the night, Mark Teltscher lost the vast majority of his stack with jacks against the pocket kings of Markku Koplimaa and Maxim Panyak took the remaining chips with eight-seven versus king-jack.

Ultimately, only 45 hopefuls bagged up chips and will be back for level 19 and blinds of 5,000/10,000 with a big blind ante of 10,000 when the action resumes on May 2 at noon local time. The PokerNews live reporting team will be there to provide all the action from the floor.

"Nice hand, good game," said Teltscher as he made his way to the exit.

Nick Petrangelo

Federico Petruzzelli raised to 14,000 from late position and Nick Petrangelo in the hijack moved all in for 273,000, Petruzzelli called for a big portion of his own stack and announced in Italian to a friend on the rail that he had a coin flip.

Nick Petrangelo: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}
Federico Petruzzelli: {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}

Petruzzeli Doubles Through Melogno; Gives it to Danchev

Nível 17 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Dimitar Danchev
Dimitar Danchev

A big pot was brewing between Pablo Melogno and Federico Petruzzelli, culminating in a board of {10-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{6-Hearts}. According to Nick Petrangelo, Melogno had four-bet to 75,000 preflop and bet the flop for 44,000, which Petruzzelli called. Both checked the turn and Melogno bet the river for 66,000. Petruzzelli moved all in for 223,000 and Melogno called to get shown {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} for the back door nut flush.

Melogno shook his head in disgust while tabling {Q-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for a straight and lost a massive chunk of his stack.

The action on the table didn't stop there yet, though, as Petruzzelli was involved in another three-bet pot right after and faced Dimitar Danchev. The latter bet the {A-Clubs}{6-Spades}{5-Hearts} flop and was called, the {4-Diamonds} turn was checked. On the {10-Clubs} river they got it in with Danchev as the player at risk for 410,000 and Petruzzelli looked him up with {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts} only to get shown {A-Spades}{A-Hearts} for the higher flush.

"Wow, nice hand," Petruzzelli sighed and had to forfeit the chips he had just acquired.

After Brian Altman had doubled through Hossein Ensan to take half of the stack of the German, Ensan had dropped to around 150,000.

Antoine Saout then raised to 12,000 in the hijack and Ensan called from one seat over. Alexis Fleur on the button three-bet to 42,000 and that forced out Saout. Ensan used one time bank extension and moved all in, which Fleur called instantly.

Hossein Ensan: {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}

David Peters Has All the Chips; Lew and Cygan Eliminated

Nível 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
David Peters
David Peters

In-credible.

In the biggest setup of the tournament, David Peters has scooped up a pot of over 1 million chips and ascended to a monster chip lead, taking all of Lukasz Cygan's and Randy Lew's in the process. The action started with Cygan opening to 10,000 in middle position and Lew calling from the cutoff.

David Peters three-bet to 45,000 from the small blind and Cygan called. Then, everything went haywire. Back on Lew, he opted to move all in for 323,000, which brought the action back to Peters who also shoved.

Cygan was visibly displeased with the situation at hand but couldn't get away from it. He called it off after ten seconds for his total stack of 420,000 to create the monster pot.

Randy Lew: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}
Lukasz Cygan: {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades}
David Peters: {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}

It was the mother of all setups and Peters found himself in a dream spot. The board stayed low and ran out {8-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{7-Spades}{2-Clubs} to end Cygan and Lew's tournament life on the spot. Lew shook Peters hand, while Cygan just walked away in disbelief over what just happened.

Peters soared to a huge stack worth 1.6 million, double the amount of his nearest challenger.

Two Double Knockouts in Quick Succession

Nível 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Adrian Mateos
Adrian Mateos

Pasquale Braco pushed from early position and Jack Salter did so from one seat over, while the action folded to Mark Teltscher in the big blind. The Brit verified with the dealer that both players were all in, peeked at his cards and called instantly.

Pasquale Braco: {J-Diamonds}{10-Spades}
Jack Salter: {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}
Mark Teltscher: {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}

"Ace from space," Salter joked but the {K-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Clubs} flop immediately crushed all hopes. "Give me that sweet four," Salter added but was left drawing dead on the {2-Spades} turn to render the {10-Diamonds} river to a mere formality.

The table was next to break, however another double elimination took place before that happened.

Short stack Makram Saber pushed, as did Boris Kuzmanovic, and Adrian Mateos, who had been down to 15,000 not long ago, called with the superior stack.

Makram Saber: {3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}
Boris Kuzmanovic: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}
Adrian Mateos: {A-Hearts}{k-Spades}

With the board running out {K-Hearts}{10-Spades}{4-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}, the second double elimination took place and Mateos suddenly jumped up to an average stack.

Sam Greenwood: {a-Spades}{8-Diamonds}

Zeitoun looked in good shape to double up and extend this already elongated bubble, but there was an ace on the {a-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{6-Hearts} flop to hand Greenwood the lead.

Three All-ins, Jiang Eliminated; Play on Exact Money Bubble

Nível 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Sosia Jiang
Sosia Jiang

There were three all-ins and calls while hand-for-hand two players from the money in the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo©Casino EPT. Once all hands were finished they started to announce them one by one, starting with the lowest table number first.

Ionut-Flavius Voinea was all in and at risk for 60,000 with the {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} and Brian Altman had looked him up with the {A-Spades}{10-Spades}. The board came {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{9-Clubs} and Voinea doubled.

In the second hand Sosia Jiang raised to 9,000 and Javier Fernandez three-bet to 30,000. Jiang moved all in for 160,000 and Fernandez called. When the tv crew arrived at the table the cards were turned over, and it wasn't good news for Jiang.

Sosia Jiang: {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}
Javier Fernandez: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}

With Jiang's brother standing next to her for support, the board ran out {10-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{2-Spades}{10-Clubs}{5-Spades} and Jiang was eliminated.

Last but not least, Ali Chaieb raised to 11,500 on the button and PokerStars online qualifier Carl-Fredrik Tingvall came along from the small blind. Tingvall check-raised all in for 24,000 on the {A-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{6-Clubs} flop and Chaieb called.

Carl-Fredrik Tingvall: {A-Spades}{J-Hearts}
Ali Chaieb: {5-Clubs}{5-Spades}

The {9-Hearts} turn gave Chaieb a straight draw, but the {A-Hearts} river bricked off.

Play is now on the money bubble with 112 players left and 111 paid. They are all playing eight-handed around 14 tables.
