Mark Demirdijan

After ten levels of play in the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo©Casino EPT Main Event, it is Mark Demirdjian who bagged a jaw-dropping 350,500 to lead at the end of Day 1a.

Helped by the eliminations of Stephen Chidwick and two-time EPT champion Victoria Coren-Mitchell, Demirdjian is way clear of his rivals and is in good shape going into Day 2.

Other big stacks include Nick Petrangelo (213,000), David Peters (191,300), Antoine Saout (123,100) and Christopher Frank (126,700).

Notables advancing include Justin Bonomo (32,100), former EPT winner Mark Teltscher (54,000), Ryan Riess, (34,100), PokerStars Team Online Randy Lew (74,400), Team Pros Leo Fernandez (66,700) and Jake Cody (18,300), Rainer Kempe (87,000), Sosia Jiang (90,900) and Paul Newey (30,300).

The day started at midday, with the first players taking their seats with Team PokerStars Pro Celina Lin and former EPT Grand Final champion Steve O'Dwyer in the mix. Lin was soon joined by fellow Team Pro Fatima Moreira de Melo and two-time EPT champion Mitchell

Coren-Mitchell was seated at a table with Ondrej Drozd, Kenny Hallaert and Jan-Eric Schwippert and didn't have an easy day before she was eliminated with jacks into the aces of Demirdjian.

Another notable in the field was Andreas Klatt, who last year won the PokerStars National Championship Monte Carlo (€151,445) and finished runner-up in the PokerStars Championship Monte Carlo Main Event (€402,786).

The big names would continue to arrive, with Team Pros Liv Boeree, Leo Fernandez and Jake Cody along with Team Online's Randy Lew joining the field, along with €100k High Roller final tablists Ole Schemion, Justin Bonomo and Ike Haxton.

Among the players who failed to make it through to Day 2 at the first time of asking were Mikita Badziakouski, Team Pros Boeree and Moreira de Melo, Mustapha Kanit, Benjamin Pollak, Dominik Nitsche, Matthias De Meulder and Bryn Kenney.

Day 1b gets underway at midday local time tomorrow (29th April) and PokerNews will bring you all the live updates.

Boeree Busts for a Second Time

Nível 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Liv Boeree
Liv Boeree

PokerStars Team Pro Liv Boeree has fallen victim to the hot run of Dragos Trofimov, who had tripled up just before against Paul Newey and Julian Stuer. Boeree then got her second entry in with the {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} and Trofimov had one over card with the {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}.

The board came {9-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{A-Spades}{J-Hearts} and Trofimov turned the ace to send Boeree to the rail for certain.

Shyngis Satubayev
Shyngis Satubayev

Shyngis Satubayev opened to 2,000 and Dinesh Alt three-bet to 7,000 in the small blind, which Satubayev called. On a flop of {A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{5-Clubs} both players opted to check before Alt bet the {3-Clubs} turn for 6,600. Satubayev raised it up to 21,500 and received the call.

After the {4-Diamonds} river, Alt checked and faced the all in of Satubayev for 46,900, which the Swiss called after some consideration. Satubayev rolled over {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} for the nut flush and Alt mucked {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}. "We had history before," Alt added and dropped to a few big blinds only.

Badziakouski Misses Too Many Outs

Nível 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Mikita Badziakouski
Mikita Badziakouski

Mikita Badziakouski raised from middle position and was called by Boris Kuzmanovic from one seat over. On the {J-Clubs}{8-Spades}{5-Spades} flop, Badziakouski continued for 4,000 into a pot of 6,000 and Kuzmanovic called before facing the shove of the Belorussian on the {Q-Clubs} turn. The all in was for 14,400 and Kuzmanovic reluctantly tossed in a single chip for the call.

Mikita Badziakouski: {7-Spades}{6-Spades}
Boris Kuzmanovic: {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts}

Despite having a ton of outs with his open-ended straight flush draw, Badziakouski couldn't get there on a blank {3-Diamonds} river to bust on his first entry. "It's okay, I can buy in again tomorrow," he said on his way out.

Demirdjian Busts Chidwick

Nível 6 : 200/500, 500 ante
Stephen Chidwick
Stephen Chidwick

The colleagues of the PokerStars blog team caught the elimination of Stephen Chidwick, which vaulted Mark Demirdjian into a big stack. Chidwick had flopped a set with {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds} only for Demirdjian with {A-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} to get there with a runner runner straight on the board of {J-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{Q-Spades}{K-Clubs}.

Demirdjian had previously also sent Victoria Coren-Mitchell to the rail when his aces held up against the pocket jacks of the only two-time EPT Main Event champion thus far.

Picking up the action on the {J-Spades}{9-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{K-Spades} turn, Yichuan Ye checked out of the big blind and Matthias Eibinger on the button bet 3,000. Ye check-raised to 8,000 and Eibinger called. The {Q-Spades} river completed the board and Ye checked. Eibinger moved all in for around 15,000 and was snap-called by Ye to turn over {K-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} for kings and eights, which Ya had beat with {Q-Clubs}{10-Spades} for the straight.

2017 MonteDam Swing Winner Andreas Klatt in the Field

Andreas Klatt
Andreas Klatt

This time last year, at the PokerStars Championship Monte Carlo, Andreas Klatt won the PokerStars National Championship Monte Carlo (€151,445) and finished runner-up in the PokerStars Championship Monte Carlo Main Event (€402,786). Coupled with a cash in the WPT Amsterdam Main Event, it meant that the German walked away with a €7,500 package to the PokerStars Championship Barcelona.

This year, Klatt is back and seated in the Main Event next to John Juanda and will be hoping for another deep run. As deep as last year? "It's not possible this time," replied Klatt.

Two-Time EPT Champion Coren-Mitchell in the Field

Nível 3 : 100/200, 200 ante
Two-time EPT Champion Victoria Coren-Mitchell
Two-time EPT Champion Victoria Coren-Mitchell

We've seen Mark Teltscher, Steve O'Dwyer and John Juanda. All are former EPT champions in their own right, and they've been joined in the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo©Casino EPT field by another former champion, and this one is a special one.

Victoria Coren-Mitchell took down EPT 3 London for £500,000, and then followed it up with a history-making second title at EPT 10 San Remo for a further €476,100. She spoke to us briefly and explained how she was enjoying a break with her husband and child.

"We took the train to Paris and then drove down from there," she explained, "It's a fun holiday now, but it's expensive! By the time you are here you have to come third to make your money back."

Coren-Mitchell could have been excused for thinking that, after the introduction of the PokerStars Championship tournaments, that her feat of winning two EPT titles was secure in the annals of history. However, with EPT Sochi a month ago, the tournament is back on the European poker calendar.

Now that it's back, how would she feel if a former champion joined her in the two-time club?

"I would be very happy for them," she said jovially, "I think it would show that there are still people and players around in poker today who have been playing poker for long enough that it's possible."

Last year Coren-Mitchell cashed in the PokerStars Championship Monte Carlo Main Event, and she's back for another EPT stop this year. Will we be seeing more of her at tournaments in the future?

"Maybe. I was going to go to Barcelona but then I went on a proper holiday instead. I'd definitely play a bit more if they had a big tournament in London. I'm thinking of organizing a big tournament in London. It's a case of if you want something done, then you have to do it yourself!"

We'll be keeping an eye on Coren-Mitchell throughout the rest of the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo©Casino EPT Main Event.

Among the new faces in the field are Dutch High Roller and Monaco resident Govert Metaal as well as Roman Emelyanov.

Defending champion of the EPT Main Event title in Monaco is Slovakia's Jan Bendik, while 2017 PokerStars Championship presented by Monte-Carlo©Casino Main Event winner Raffaele Sorrentino will be back for another shot at a title after qualifying online for the event.
