November Niner Jerry Wong Leads Record-Shattering EPT Prague €10,300 High Roller

Nível 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Jerry Wong

While it's uncertain what the future of the Prague stop on the schedule will be next year when the European Poker Tour is rebranded and divided in PokerStars Championships and PokerStars Festivals, today made clear there's a poker-loving community here with deep pockets. After two impromptu Single-Day High Roller, today it was time for the regular €10,300 High Roller event.

The field in this closing high roller event has grown over the years from 26 in the inaugural edition in 2010, to 315 last year when Kenny Smaron won the whole thing for €595,500. Well, like just about all the records this week, today's version of the event crushed that number. While registration is open till the start of play on Day 2, upon closing of the day the clock showed 394 entries.

After 10 levels of play, 200 players remain. November Niner Jerry Wong leads with 402,900. Russian player Andrey "Kroko-dill" Zaichenko, who won this event back in 2014 for €487,180, is on his heels with 365,000.

Right from the start, the room was buzzing. It seemed that anyone that could spare €10,300, entered the event. And those who couldn't walked around looking for investors. Even before the first level was done, predictions were made that the record would be broken. By the time the dinner break came by, those betting against it would need to hit the ATM as they were proven wrong.

Rocco Palumbo was one of the early leaders, busting Scott Margereson in a flip with jacks to ace-king. While he wouldn't end with the lead, he did hold on to his chips the entire day, and slowly but steadily, the Italian added to his stack to end the day with 258,000.

One of the bigger pots early on was one between [Removed:197] and Igor Kurganov. [Removed:198], a poker superstar some seasons ago, since retired but now making a comeback in Prague, stuck in five bets before the flop with ace-king and got a call out of Kurganov. The board brought a jack and a king and [Removed:198] continued. With a queen hitting the turn, [Removed:198] and Kurganov both had a tough spot. [Removed:198] had ace-king and only effectively a third pot behind. [Removed:198] choose to shove. Kurganov had an over pair with aces and faced just as tough a choice. He was getting such a good price, but what could he beat? After some time, and the clock called, Kurganov called with the better hand. [Removed:198] still had chips left and would finish the day on 64,600 chips. Kurganov returns tomorrow with exactly 150,000 in chips.

It wasn't the biggest pot, but a hand between Bryan Piccioli and Tamer Kamel did make headlines as it was Piccioli making a royal flush, something you don't see every day, even when you see hundreds of hands every day. Kamel had a lower flush and had to leave the pot to Piccioli. The latter ended with 91,100 in chips, Kamel with just 40,800.

Another player that made headlines was EPT Barcelona champion Sebastian Malec. Not because he was gathering heaps of chips — he was, but that wasn't why photographers were constantly snapping photos of him — but because he was dressed as Harry Potter. Besides the RayBan Potter-style glasses he had a Gryffindor sweater and a magic wand he waved when all in. Among others, he waved it at Pascal Lefrancois to send the French-Canadian packing. Lefrancois won't return on Day 2 as he busted twice, Malec will bring 139,800 to the table when play starts.

Jerry Wong gathered the most chips of all. No royal flushes or Halloween outfits for Wong; we reported on him solely because he was crushing all day. He started off great snagging chips from Thi Xoa Nguyen who was value betting her top set of kings all the way, only to stare into Wong's straight on the river. When he busted a bluffing Michael Gathy a couple levels later, he completed a wall of chips that would make Donald Trump proud.

Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier busted two bullets and tweeted he was happy the year was over. His colleague, PokerStars Team Pro Liv Boeree, did make it through as she'll bring almost 100,000 in chips to Day 2 from a 50,000 starting stack.

194 players survived Day 1 of the three-day event. Day 2 of the last-ever EPT Prague €10,000 High Roller kicks off at 12:30. The first level on the schedule is 1,000/2,000 with an ante of 300. Players can buy in till the start of play, getting 25 big blinds in return for €10,300. PokerNews will be on the floor to bring you updates all day long.

Malec Waves Wizard Wand to Knockout Lefrancois

Nível 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Isaac Haxton was once quoted saying "[...] we look kinda similar. When I first started playing live cash games, the regs at Turning Stone called me Harry Potter" when asked who should play him in a movie.

Well, at his table sits EPT Barcelona champion Sebastian Malec and he's dressed as Harry Potter. He's not just wearing the iconic Harry Potter glasses, he's also sporting a Gryffindor sweater and has a wand which he's waving when all in. Just now, he needed to wave it really hard because he needed some help when he got his chips in the middle.

We caught the tail end of that hand, but Malec himself told us after the hand what had happened prior.

Rainer Kempe opened under the gun and Pascal Lefrancois called from the hijack. Sebastian Malec over called from the button and both blinds came along as well to make it five-handed.

The flop came {4-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} and action checked to Lefrancois who bet 3,000. Malec called, both blinds folded and Kempe squeezed to 9,800. Now Lefrancois called and, wouldn't you know it, Malec pushed all in by placing a huge tower worth 100,000 forward. Kempe folded, Lefrancois went deep into the tank.

After some time, he called for 26,600 more and it was time for Malec to put his wizard wand to work.

Sebastian Malec: {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}
Pascal Lefrancois: {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}

The {6-Spades} on the turn wasn't doing it for Malec but the waving of the wand paid off as the {9-Diamonds} completed the board, gifting Malec the magic flush while Lefrancois exited.

Royal Flush for Piccioli

Nível 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
Bryan Piccioli
Bryan Piccioli

Now here's something you don't see every day. In fact, we didn't see it, but we heard the details from our colleagues from the PokerStars Blog.

Bryan Piccioli raised the hijack and Tamer Kamel defended his big blind. Both players checked the flop of {A-Spades}{10-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} and the {J-Spades} hit the turn. Kamel checked, and called the 3,200 bet that followed.

The {10-Spades} completed the board and Kamel checked. Piccioli bet 8,500 and Kamel called.

Kamel had a pretty good hand with {6-Spades}{2-Spades} for a flush. It was second-best, though, as Bryan Piccioli tabled {K-Spades}{Q-Spades} for a royal flush!

Sergeev Busts Detournel

Nível 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
Sergey Sergeev
Sergey Sergeev

On a three-way flop of {4-Hearts}{5-Spades}{2-Clubs}, Xavier Detournel checked in the big blind and Kenny Hallaert bet 3,000 from the cutoff. Sergey Sergeev raised to 7,700 on the button and both opponents called.

The {7-Diamonds} fell on the turn and Detournel bet 21,500, Hallaert gave it some thought and folded with a sigh. Sergeev called rather quickly and the {3-Hearts} came on the river. Detournel shoved and Sergeev called to get shown {A-Diamonds}{3-Spades}. Slowly, Sergeev turned over his {A-Spades}{6-Clubs} and said "I win, better kicker."

Detournel was shocked and stood up from his chair, shaking his head. "Why do you bluff?" Sergeev asked before raking in the pot. At the same time, one table over, Bruno Lopes was eliminated as well.

Ruzicka's Bluff Goes Wrong

Nível 5 : 250/500, 75 ante
Vojtech Ruzicka
Vojtech Ruzicka

Max Silver opened to 1,200 and Ari Engel called before Vojtech Ruzicka three-bet to 4,900 on the button. Only Silver called and check-called the {6-Spades}{3-Clubs}{5-Spades} flop for 4,000. On the {3-Diamonds} turn, Silver check-called another barrel worth 8,050 and checked the third street in a row on the {3-Spades} river.

Ruzicka shoved for 27,475 and Silver was sent into the think tank. He talked through possible hands, and eventually called. Ruzicka tapped the table in defeat and said "good call" before rolling over his {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for a bluff, Silver claimed the pot with {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} for a full house.

Nguyen Versus Wong

Nível 3 : 150/300, 50 ante
Thi Xoa Nguyen
Thi Xoa Nguyen

November Niner Jerry Wong opened for 800 and two positions over, seated in the hijack, Thi Xoa Nguyen three-bet to 3,000. Action folded around back to Wong and he called.

Wong checked on {K-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} and Nguyen answered with a bet of 3,000. Wong called.

The {7-Hearts} on the turn saw the same routine: Wong checked, Nguyen bet (this time 7,000) and Wong called.

With the {8-Clubs} completing the board, Wong checked for the third time. Nguyen asked to see how much Wong was still playing and eventually bet 20,000, about two-thirds of what Wong had behind.

Wong called and Nguyen showed {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} for top set. Wong was quick to reveal his {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and raked in the chips.

"Wow" was all Nguyen could say.

Papazian Wins Battle of Romanians

Nível 3 : 150/300, 50 ante
Alexandru Papazian
Alexandru Papazian

We missed the beginning of the hand, but Michael Rocco was kind enough to inform us on what had happened.

Alin Pandilica opened to 600 from the cutoff and Rocco three-bet to 2,400. Alexandru Papazian called from the blinds before Pandilica four-bet to 7,100. Rocco folded, Papazian called.

The flop came {8-Spades}{5-Spades}{X-Hearts} and Papazian check-called a bet of 8,200. The {4-Spades} hit the turn and Papazian bet out 13,075. Pandilica raised and Papazian did one last double check before calling all in with {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}. Pandilica mucked but his {Q-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} was shown anyway because it was an all in and call situation.

The {10-Diamonds} on the river was a blank and Pandilica was knocked down to 26,000 while Papazian doubled to over 100,000.

From early position, Igor Kurganov opened for 800. After the cutoff called, Alexander Ivarsson on the button squeezed to 2,100. Kurganov four-bet to 6,500 and the cutoff folded. Ivarsson five-bet to 13,600 and Kurganov called.

Kurganov checked on {5-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} and called the 9,500 continuation bet that followed. Both players then checked the {3-Spades} on the turn and the {10-Hearts} completed the board. Kurganov bet 16,000 and Ivarsson folded just about right away.
