Philip Sternheimer Leads the Last €10K High Roller of the EPT

Nível 19 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Philip Sternheimer

The 2014 PokerStars.it European Poker Tour Sanremo Main Event played down to a final table today, as did the €10,300 High Roller. The last €10K buy-in High Roller of the season attracted two late reentries, which brought the field up to 105 entries (88 unique/17 reentries) and created a prize pool of €1,029,000. The top 15 would make the money, with the eventual winner taking home €265,000.

After nine one-hour levels of play on Day 2, the field was whittled down to the final table of eight. The man best positioned to make a run at the top prize is Philip Sternheimer, who is the chip leader with 938,000. That said, he faces some stiff competition that includes Griffin Benger (892,000) and Ole Schemion (831,000).

As previously mentioned, just two players opted to reenter before the start of play – Olivier Busquet and Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst. The latter was eager to amass some EPT10 Player of the Year points, but it proved a quick and fruitless endeavor.

Vanessa SelbstNo one should let me play 22bb poker on no sleep. Made terrible jam pre with KQ and busted within 10 min. Worst part is now I'm in San Remo.

Busquet lasted quite a bit longer, but ultimately fell short of the money. Others who left empty handed included Connor Drinan, Jeff Rossiter, Martin Finger, Sylvain Loosli, Martin Jacobson, Yann Dion, Steve O'Dwyer, Mickey Petersen, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Day 1 chip leader Alexander Kopylkov, and Ognjen Sekularac, who ended up as the bubble boy.

Sekularac was eliminated in Level 17 (4,000/8,000/1,000) when he was all in and at risk for 96,000 with the {A-Clubs}{J-Spades} and Sternheimer made a reluctant call with the {A-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}. The {6-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} flop kept the Serbian in the lead, but then the {8-Hearts} appeared on the turn. No jack on the river and Sekularac was out in 16th place with nothing to show for it.

From there the in-the-money eliminations began to mount and included Dmitry Yurasov (15th - €17,500), Thomas Muhlocker (14th - €17,500), Artem Litvinov (13th - €19,050), Ismail Erkenov (12th - €19,050), Jason Lavallee (11th - €21,600), David Vamplew (10th - €21,600), and Dimitar Danchev (9th - €26,750), who lost a flip to finish as the final table bubble boy.

The third and final day will kick off at 12 p.m. local time on Sunday and the remaining eight players will play down to a winner. The the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand to capture the action in both the High Roller and the Main Event.

Join us then, but while you wait be sure to check out this video where your favorite pros explain what they do to prepare for the day:

Dimitar Danchev Eliminated in 9th Place (€26,750)

Nível 19 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Dimitar Danchev
Dimitar Danchev

In the last hand of Level 19, Dimitar Danchev moved all in for 150,000 or so from middle position and Max Greenwood called from the button. The blinds both folded and it was off to the races.

Greenwood: {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}
Danchev: {a-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}

According to the PokerNews Odds Calculator, Greenwood was a slight 54.74% favorite while Danchev would survive 44.79% of the time. The {10-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{2-Clubs} flop was no help to Danchev, and his chances fell to 25.45% while Greenwood's jumped to 70%.

The {3-Diamonds} turn was another blank, which made Greenwood an overwhelming 86.36% favorite. Danchev needed either an ace or queen — something that would happen 13.64% of the time — but it wasn't in the cards as the {8-Spades} blanked.

David Vamplew Eliminated in 10th Place (€21,600)

Nível 19 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
David Vamplew
David Vamplew

We have reached the unofficial final table of nine players.

It happened when David Vamplew three-bet to 60,000 after an open-raise from Griffin Benger and Ole Schemion moved all in. Benger quickly tossed his cards into the muck and the call from Vamplew was even faster.

Schemion: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}
Vamplew: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades}

The EPT Player of the Year (POY) contender flopped the nuts on {J-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{10-Hearts} flop and the {3-Spades} turn and {4-Hearts} river both blanked. Schemion had more than 500,000 in chips and Vamplew was covered. Vamplew was eliminated in ninth place and we now have the last redraw in this tournament.

Jason Lavallee Eliminated in 11th Place (€21,600)

Nível 18 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Jason Lavallee
Jason Lavallee

It was not really a good day at the office for the second in chips at the start, Jason Lavallee. Down to only 130,000 he three-bet shoved into a raise of Alex Bilokur and was called by the Russian. Showdown:

Lavallee: {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}
Bilokur: {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}

A typical coin flip that you encounter to often deep in tournaments. Lavallee had two over cards and a possible flush draw, however the Canadian couldn't connect with the {J-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{4-Hearts} board. He shook hands with all opponents and left in the second last hand of level 18.

Ismail Erkenov Eliminated in 12th Place (€19,050)

Nível 18 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Ismail Erkenov - 12th
Ismail Erkenov - 12th

Ismail Erkenov open shoved from the button for his last 140,000. Max Greenwood quickly folded the small blind but Griffin Benger in the big blind just as quickly announced “Call.”

Erkenov obviously knew from his tone what that meant and said “Oh.”

Oh indeed as Erkenov’s {6-Clubs}{6-Spades} had run into the {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades} of Benger.

The dealer dealt {10-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{9-Spades}{k-Hearts} and Erkenov was out.

Everyone knew that Erkenov had sucked out on Berger earlier and Greenwood commented to Berger, “You know the expression chip warmer?”

Benger wasn’t sure he’d heard it before but he understood what it meant.

Artem Litvinov Eliminated in 13th Place (€19,050)

Artem Litvinov

After a raise to 20,000, Griffin Benger in the cutoff three-bet to 48,000 and Artem Litvinov moved all in from the small blind for what looked like 100,000. The big blind and initial raiser folded, but Benger made the call.

Benger: {Q-Diamonds}{10-Spades}
Litvinov: {K-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}

This time Benger held the worse hand preflop but got there as the board ran out {J-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}. Litvinov headed to the payout desk and we will have by far less table talk now.

Dmitry Yurasov Eliminated in 15th Place (€17,500)

Dmitry Yurasov

Dmitry Yurasov opened under the gun and got called by big blind Mustapha Kanit.

The two players saw a flop of {a-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{7-Clubs}. Kanit checked and Yurasov continued for 18,000. Kanit made the call and the turn card fell the {j-Diamonds}. Kanit checked and Yurasov moved all in. Kanit quickly made the call.

Yurasov tabled {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} and rolled his eyes when he saw Kanit had got there on the turn with his {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs} for a straight.

The river card was the {7-Spades} and Yurasov was the first to hit the rail in the money.

Bubble Bursts With Bad Beat

Nível 17 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Ognjen Sekularac bubbles the High Roller
Ognjen Sekularac bubbles the High Roller

We are in the money and the better hand preflop lost. It was Ognjen Sekularac who was all in and at risk for 96,000 with the {A-Clubs}{J-Spades} and Philip Sternheimer made the reluctant call with the {A-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}. The {6-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} flop brought no change and the Serbian was still ahead.

However, the {8-Hearts} on the turn saw Sternheimer improve. No jack on the river but instead the {7-Hearts} saw the money bubble burst and all remaining 15 players now have €17,500 guaranteed.

Kamel Eliminates Garcia With Big Call

Nível 16 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Myro Garcia
Myro Garcia

Dimitar Danchev opened for 12,000 and Tamer Kamel right next to him made the call. Myro Garcia on the button squeezed to 40,000 and both blinds folded. Danchev did the same, but Kamel paid the extra money to see a flop.

Both players checked on {10-Hearts}{4-Spades}{2-Hearts}. Kamel led out for 35,000 once the {6-Diamonds} hit the turn. Garcia didn't need much time to make the call.

The river came the {2-Diamonds} and Kamel bet out 55,000. Garcia was done with the passive approach and announced allin for 135,500 more than the 55,000 Kamel already had in there.

It was a big moment for Kamel and he needed some time. While the level was almost done, and the vouchers for the buffet upstairs were handed out, Kamel counted out his stack. He wouldn't have much left would he call and be wrong. But eventually he did make the call.

Garcia tabled his {A-Hearts}{K-Spades} with some frustration. Kamel showed his {9-Clubs}{10-Clubs} and so eliminated his Brazilian opponent.
