Troyanovskiy Leads Surviving 123 Players; Ivey & O'Dwyer Fall

Nível 14 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Vladimir Troyanovskiy
Vladimir Troyanovskiy

Day 2 of the 2014 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final Main Event continued today as the surviving 347 players from the two starting flights returned for six more 75-minute levels of play. Actually, it’d be more than that as half a dozen players took advantage of late registration. When the final second ticked off the clock, just 123 would remain with Vladimir Troyanovskiy and his stack of 450,500 leading the way.

Once registration closed at the start of the day, the official numbers were released. The final EPT Main Event of Season 10 attracted 650 players, which was a nice increase over Season 9’s 531. That created a prize pool of €6.5 million. That will be distributed to the top 95 players with a hefty €1,240,000 reserved for the winner.

The day was characterized by eliminations, which included that of the defending champ Steve O’Dwyer. According to him, he had shoved his last ten big blinds in with king-nine suited. He had five opponents to overcome, but that proved too big a mission to accomplish as the player on the button woke up with pocket aces. With O'Dwyer out, Team PokerStars Pro Johnny Lodden became the last finalist standing from last year’s final table, which is considered one of the most stacked in history.

Of course O’Dwyer wasn’t the only notable to fall. Team PokerStars Pro Chris Moneymaker was felled within the first few minutes, while his fellow Team Pro, the short-stacked Liv Boeree, followed him out the door a short time later after she failed to win a race. Likewise, Full Tilt Poker Professional Viktor "Isildur1" Blom hit the rail after running into pocket aces, while the other Professional, late registrant Gus Hansen, exited holding deuce-four.

Team PokerStars Pros who also bowed out of the tournament on Day 2 were Juan Manuel Pastor, Nacho Barbero, Humberto Brenes, Alex Kravchenko, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Marcel Luske, Mickey Petersen, Eugene Katchalov, George Danzer, Barry Greenstein, Marc-Andre Ladouceur and Ivan Demidov. Notables such as Max Altergott, Annette Obrestad, Byron Kaverman, Sorel Mizzi, David Peters, Timothy Adams, Mike “Timex” McDonald, Antonio Esfandiari, and Phil Ivey joined them on the rail.

Ivey had hit a heater earlier in the day to chip up to 240,000, and it looked like he was primed to make a deep run. Unfortunately a cooler in Level 13 (1,000/2,000/300) put an end to those hopes. It began when Italy’s Marcello Marigliano opened under the gun and received two callers. Ivey then called from the cutoff, the big blind came along, and five players took a flop of {q-}{10-}{9-} with two diamonds.

Action checked to Ivey and he promptly bet 15,000. The big blind called, and then Marigliano check-raised to 33,000. Two folds put action back on Ivey and he moved all in for roughly 160,000. The big blind folded and Marigliano made the call.

Ivey tabled {j-}{8-} for a flopped straight, but it was no good as Marigliano had flopped an even bigger straight with {k-}{j-}. Neither the turn nor river provided Ivey with a king to chop, and just like that the man was gone.

While many fell, an accomplished list of notables managed to make it through to Day 3 including Steven Silverman (369,900), Talal Shakerchi (365,800), Nick Maimone (358,800), Day 1b chip leader Hendrik Latz (278,400), Philipp Gruissem (268,000), Dani Stern (256,100), Sam Trickett (237,000), Ole Schemion (233,600), and Scott Clements (229,700). Likewise, members of Team PokerStars that punched their ticket were Johnny Lodden (326,500), Ville Wahlbeck (265,100), Angel Guillen (175,400), David Williams (145,900), and Andre Akkari (82,100).

At Noon local time on Tuesday, the surviving players will return to the Salles des Etoiles room at Le Sporting to play five 90-minute levels. During that time the money bubble will burst. The PokerNews Live Reporting will be on hand to capture all the action, so be sure to join us then.

In the meantime, find out how players take advantage of their breaks here in Monte Carlo:

Silverman And Benelli Tangle Again

Nível 14 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Benelli Eliminated
Benelli Eliminated

We missed the precise action before the flop, but Ole Schemion confirmed our assumption that one of the players had opened under the gun plus one, Andrea Benelli had called on the button and Steven Silverman had done the same from the big blind.

{7-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{8-Hearts}

Silverman checked to the initial raiser who checked behind. Benelli bet out 8,000 and Silverman check-raised to 25,000. The initial raiser folded but Benelli made the call.

The {9-Diamonds} fell on the turn and Silverman bet out 36,000. Benelli didn't need much time and called.

The {3-Clubs} completed the board and Silverman announced all in. Silverman had about 120,000 to push to the middle, a tiny bit more than Benelli who had about 114,500 to play for at this time.

Benelli took his time and at least three minutes past before Jason Duval was tired of it and called for the clock. Instead of the regular one minute, Benelli got at least two minutes from the floor. Benelli used a lot of that time to make his decision, but it was his tournament life at stake of course. Eventually he tossed in a couple of chips to indicate the call.

Silverman showed {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} and Benelli his hand was shown by the dealer; {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}. The Italian player was thus eliminated with just a couple of minutes left in the last level the day. Silverman in the meantime is nearing 400,000.

Ivey Sent to the Rail in Massive Cooler

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

Earlier today Phil Ivey hit a heater to chip up to 240,000, and it looked like the fan favorite was primed to make a deep run. Astonishingly, he is now on the rail. Not surprisingly, it was the result of a cooler.

Team Online's Marc-Andre Ladouceur, who was seated to Ivey's left, was kind enough to fill is in on some of the details after the fact. According to him, it began when Marcello Marigliano opened under the gun and received two callers.

Neither the turn nor river provided Ivey with a king to chop, and just like that the man is gone.

Another Team Pro Bites The Dust

Nível 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Marcel Lüske
Marcel Lüske

We ran into Dutch Team PokerStars Pro Marcel Lüske near the help desk outside the tournament area. That's not a good place to run into people when the tournament is going on in full force. Lüske was so kind to tell us the details of his bust out.

Lüske had a 60,000 stack when he called an early position open with {5-}{5-}. The {10-}{8-}{5-} rainbow flop connected pretty well with Lüske's pair of fives and he called the 4,000 continuation bet from his opponent. Lüske called the 8,000 bet on the {7-}-turn as well, and another 17,000 on the {K-}-river. His opponent had {J-}{9-} for a straight and beat Lüske's set of fives.

With just 16,000 remaining he saw someone open before him. Lüske shoved with {A-}{9-} and the initial raiser made the call holding {A-}{7-}. Lüske said he was pretty happy with the situation, but his mood changed after a seven gave his opponent a pair to beat Lüske's ace-nine high.

Lüske is looking forward to the €1,000 + €100 buy-in EPT Stud High Low Championships at 3pm tomorrow, and might play some other tourneys here as well.

Grospellier Eliminated By Lodden

Nível 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier

Bertrand Grospellier, who was seated at the feature table all day, has just been eliminated. He was already down to just 6,500 when his last hand started.

Lodden opened the cutoff for 3,200 and Grospellier shoved allin from the button. Both blinds folded, Lodden made the call for just a tiny bit more.

Johnny Lodden: {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}
Bertrand Grospellier: {A-Hearts}{10-Clubs}

The board din't give Grospellier any useful card with {7-Spades}{2-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{5-Hearts} and that was it for Grospellier. Lodden added the small pot to his already impressive stack, Grospellier shook hands with everyone at the table and made his exit.

Set Over Set Boosts Ivey's Stack

Nível 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

As we arrived the turn was already out in a heads up pot between Phil Ivey and Samir Bouchakour from France.

With the board reading {3-Hearts}{J-Spades}{5-Clubs}{9-Clubs}, Bouchakour checked to Ivey. The poker super star grabbed 13,000 from his stack and nonchalantly threw it in the middle. Bouchakour thought about it for a little bit and then raised it up to 27,000. Ivey made the call.

The river came the {A-Hearts} and Bouchakour checked. Ivey couldn't exactly tell how much his French opponent had behind and asked if Bouchakour could lift his arms so he could see. Bouchakour did just that and Ivey saw there was about 60,000 behind.

"Allin" he then said as he moved two towers forward. The black and red allin-triangle was tossed in front of him and Bouchakour thought about it for a little bit. "Call" he said all of the sudden. "He said call right?" asked Ivey the dealer for clarification.

Ivey showed his {5-Spades}{5-Diamonds} and Bouchakour's face changed from excited to deeply devastated. He didn't open his cards so the dealer wasn't shoving the pot to Ivey just yet. Bouchakour eventually tapped the table, and open mucked his {3-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}.

Bouchakour got up from his table with shoulders hanging and a look of despair. Ivey was stacking chips which made for about 235,000.

Ivey’s Future Plans

Nível 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

We overheard Talal Shakerchi asking Phil Ivey about his future poker plans. Ivey confirmed that he will be playing the One Drop and all the WSOP events this year but also said it would be the last time he would do such a heavy WSOP schedule.

This year would be the end of a three-year WSOP bracelet bet and from next year on Ivey stated that he planned to play cash and maybe eight or so bracelet events.

Gus Hansen Eliminated by Ole Schemion

Nível 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Gus Hansen (here in the Super High Roller)
Gus Hansen (here in the Super High Roller)

Gus Hansen is known for his high variance playing style. He showed this in the €100,000 Super High Roller where he entered late, and tripled up and busted within two levels. Here in the Main Event he didn't even make it to the second level.

He started the hand with about 13,000 in chips according to Mateusz Moolhuizen who was seated at the same table. Hansen opened for about 1,800 in middle position holding {2-Spades}{4-Spades} and got three-bet by Ole Schemion two positions next to him who had made it about 4,000. Hansen made the call and check-shoved allin on {7-}{3-}{2-} with two hearts. Schemion was committed and made the call with {A-}{Q-Hearts}.

The {5-Hearts} on the turn and {A-Hearts} on the river made for a flush for Schemion. Hansen's straight wasn't worth much and "The Great Dane" departed even before we really got to see any of him today.

A Short Day for Moneymaker

Nível 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Chris Moneymaker
Chris Moneymaker

We caught up with Team PokerStars Pro Chris Moneymaker before the start of play, and he seemed hopeful and ready to go. Little did he know that his Day 2 experience would be short and not at all sweet.

We saw Moneymaker in the hall, and he caught our glance. "One hand, flopped the nuts," Moneymaker explained without having to be asked.

We explored what happened a bit more, and according to his former table mate and fellow Team Pro George Danzer, Moneymaker actually fell over the course of two hands.

The first was when he flopped the nuts with {q-}{j-} on a {a-}{10-}{k-} board. Both he and his opponent checked, and the {9-Diamonds} turn put two diamonds on the board. Moneymaker checked, his opponent over bet, and Moneymaker three-bet, which left him just 10,000 behind. His opponent called and then Moneymaker, who actually had the bigger stack, moved all in in the dark. A third diamond hit the river, and his opponent called off with a rivered flush.

Moneymaker then raised from the button and called off after the big blind shoved all in. Moneymaker held the {q-}{10-}, but needed to improve as the big blind turned over {j-}{j-}. The {a-}{j-}{a-} flop gave the big blind a full house, and that was all she wrote for Mr. Moneymaker.

Welcome to Day 2 of the 2014 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final Main Event

Latz in the Lead
Latz in the Lead

Day 1a saw 214 players enter and 106 of those still had chips in front of them after the first eight 75-minute levels of play. On Day 1b 427 players entered and 241 made it through to Day 2. Those numbers combined make for a total of 641 entrants so far and 347 still active, with an average chip stack of a little over 55,400. Registration is open till the start of Day 2 though, so there might just be some players entering and boosting the total amount of entrants.

Though there have been no official announcements, in the most of European Poker Tour Season 10 Main Events there were six 75-minute levels of play scheduled for the second day of play. With eight on Day 1 and six on Day 2, that would take care of the 75-minute levels as the EPT Main Event structure makes the transition to 90-minute levels from level 15 and onward.

Leading the pack of 347 remaining players is Hendrik Latz with 191,600 in chips. His biggest cash to date is his 54th place in this very event last year, a deep run that banked him €18,500. The shortest of them all is PokerStars Team Pro Liv Boeree who has just 6,200 in chips. The first level to be played on Day 2 is level 9 (400/800 with a 100 ante) which gives Latz 240 big blinds at the moment, while Boeree will have to do with a little short of 8 big blinds.

The tournament will recommence at 12am local time, in about half an hour the cards will be pitched again.
