Dario Sammartino at the Summit After Day 2 of PokerStars.fr EPT Main Event

Nível 14 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Dario Sammartino
Dario Sammartino

On Tuesday, Day 2 of the PokerStars.fr European Poker Tour Deauville Main Event concluded. While no one could hit it rich on the second day of action, the players would discover how much they could win as registration closed and the prize pool information was released.

With 671 players in the field, a prize pool of €3,220,800 was generated and the top 95 spots were set to earn a minimum of €9,500. All eyes were at the top of the ladder, though, as a whopping €614,000 would be waiting there for the eventual winner.

The man best positioned of the 137 players still in contention was Dario Sammartino. His day was one built on good folds and a little bit of luck, but the Italian does have experience with making a deep run in an EPT event. Previously, his best EPT result came from a 19th-place finish in the Season 9 Grand Final. He's also riding a little bit of a current hot streak after placing third in the France Poker Series Deauville High Roller earlier this week for €63,800.

Other players who enjoyed a successful Day 2 included EPT8 Loutraki champion Zimnan Ziyard (392,500), Norbert Szcesi (386,900), Jonathan Abdellatif (351,700) and Team PokerStars Pro Eugene Katchalov (345,700). Although, of course, all of these players must be aware as a big stack can be gone in minutes — just ask Ayman Zbib, who started the day as chip leader, but was out inside two levels after losing half his stack early on.

Katchalov is the name that sticks out from that bunch of top stacks, and he will enter Day 3 fifth overall in chips. We're still a few days away from crowning a champion, but if Katchalov can win he will complete the Triple Crown. During Day 2, Katchalov won a big pot against EPT9 Barcelona champion Mikalai Pobal and eliminated Bruno Lopes.

The Ukrainian won't be the only member of Team PokerStars back for Day 3, either. He'll be joined by teammates Jan Heitmann (88,000), Alex Kravchenko (105,000), Julien Brecard (44,400), and Friend of PokerStars Pierre Neuville (50,400).

On the flip side of things, other members of the team weren't so fortunate. It was a frustrating day for Marcin Horecki, as he lost a big pot with ace-queen against pocket kings to leave him short before he busted. Friend of PokerStars Natalie Hof was also eliminated.

Tuesday was the first day of the live streaming on PokerStars.tv, and if viewers were as late as some of the players were in joining the action they'd have missed EPT6 champion Anton Wigg losing a huge 180,000-chip pot. The Swede busted shortly thereafter, and was joined by the likes of fellow former champions Toby Lewis and Kevin MacPhee. Later on in the day, the late exits of Jannick Wrang and Nicolas Chouity confirmed Ziyard as the only player able to win a second EPT Main Event title and become the first to accomplish such a feat.

On Wednesday, Day 2 will commence at 12 p.m. local time. You can find all of the event updates right here on PokerNews.com, so be sure to stay tuned for more poker action from the tournament floor in Deauville.

In the meantime, enjoy the following interview with European poker legend Barny Boatman:

Von Perger Doubles in the Confusion

Nível 14 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Jamila Von Perger
Jamila Von Perger

Dario Sammartino opened the cutoff with a raise and Jamila von Perger pushed all in from the button for 51,900. Carlos Queiroz Ferreira from France didn't see Von Perger's push and wanted to call just Sammartino's raise. He said call though, and the floor had to come over to make a ruling. The floor ruled that Ferreira had to call Von Perger's push and Sammartino quickly went out of the way.

Von Perger didn't seem too happy just yet, despite having the best hand with {A-Clubs}{6-Spades}. That ace-six was vulnerable though, Ferreira was live with his {K-Spades}{6-Clubs}.

Nobody would hit though on {7-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{9-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} and Von Perger breathed a big sigh of relief doubling up in the last hand.

Mat Floored

Dario Sammartino
Dario Sammartino

On a {A-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} flop, Dario Sammartino check-called a bet of 5,300 from Mat Frankland to see the {4-Clubs} on the turn. This time, the Italian led out for 9,000 and Frankland made the call.

The river was the {3-Hearts} and Sammartino now bet 40,000. Frankland called fairly quickly but Sammartino turned over an unlikely {J-Clubs}{5-Clubs} for a straight. The British player looked bemused and lost over half his stack as a result.

Gotta Katch 'em All

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Eugene Katchalov
Eugene Katchalov

Team PokerStars Pro Eugene Katchalov opened to 4,000 preflop from late position and Bruno "Cool Shen" Lopes made it 11,000 from the big blind. Katchalov made the call to see a {K-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{2-Spades} flop where Lopes bet 8,500.

Katchalov made the call to see the {Q-Spades} on the turn. Lopes now checked and Katchalov bet 16,500. Lopes check-raised all in and Katchalov called instantly.

Lopes: {A-Hearts}{4-Spades}
Katchalov: {A-Clubs}{J-Clubs}

The river was the {4-Diamonds} and Lopes was eliminated. Katchalov has a huge stack now.

Boyaciyan Busted

Nível 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
David Boyaciyan
David Boyaciyan

EPT Prague serial final tabler David Boyaciyan has just been eliminated from the tournament.

Mitch Johnson from the UK opened the hijack and Frenchman Laurent Bachelet in the cutoff made the call. Dutchman David Boyaciyan on the button opted to call as well but Joel Ferando Durfort in the small blind had other plans. He squeezed and scared away Johnson and Bachelet. Boyaciyan however called and they saw a flop heads up.

{10-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}

Durfort continued with a bet of 25,000 and Boyaciyan made the call. The turn was the {5-Hearts} and Durfort now pushed all in. Boyaciyan would be at risk if he called and did just so. Boyaciyan was in trouble as his {10-Spades}{9-Diamonds} was up against Durfort's {J-Spades}{J-Hearts}.

The river was the {9-Spades} and for a millisecond Boyaciyan thought he had delivered a suck out. He quickly realised the {5-Hearts} on the turn had counterfeited him as his two pair was no good against the higher two pair. He wished the table good luck and gracefully left for the exit.

Berende Loses a Big One

Nível 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Paul Berende
Paul Berende

The cutoff opened to 3,500 with a 45,000 stack and Marco Della Tommasina made it 10,000 to go from the button with a 60,000 stack. The big blind had just one big blind left so he wasn't a big threat to Paul Berende who was seated in the small blind with {A-}{Q-} and a stack big enough to cover everyone.

Berende decided to push all in, effectively putting everyone else at risk but himself. The big blind had no other choice and called, the cutoff folded. Della Tommasina on the button however made the call with kings and won the entire thing.

Berende didn't seem all that happy with his play in the hand. Luckily for him he still has around 75,000 left.

Paul Berende
Paul Berende

A fast start on Day 2 has quickly pushed Dutch player Paul Berende near the top of the counts. Berende is looking to make a move up another leaderboard, too, as he sits just inside the top 20 in the current EPT10 Player of the Year rankings. Laura Cornelius caught up with Berende to talk about his career thus far, one marked by both online and live successes. Read and watch over on the PokerStars blog.

Kravchenko Doubles

Nível 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Alex Kravchenko
Alex Kravchenko

When we arrived at the table, Alex Kravchenko was already all in and a call had followed. Kravchenko was seated in the cutoff position and his opponent, Bastian Fischer, was handling things from the big blind.

Kravchenko was all in for 29,600 with {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades}. Fischer held {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts} and flopped a queen: {Q-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}. Fischer would not improve more with the {5-Spades} on the turn and {9-Spades} on the river though.

Kravchenko doubled his stack, Fischer has to continue with just about 15,000 in chips.
