Fazzino Leads after Day 3, Seiver, Mizzi, and Seidel Survive

Nível 19 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Salvatore Fazzino
Salvatore Fazzino

Day 3 of the 2014 Aussie Millions Main Event is in the books, and leading the remaining 36 players is Salvatore Fazzino. On the final hand of the night, Fazzino eliminated one time chip leader Gareth Dwyer when both players flopped a set. Fazzino’s set of jacks trumped Dwyer’s set of fours, and the money went in the middle. Dwyer was unable to make quads, and exited just shy of Day 4.

Scott Seiver and Sorel Mizzi also finished the day with over a million chips. Seiver won a massive 1.5 million-chip pot off of Florian Bussman in Level 18 when the two got into a preflop raising war. Faced with a raise, Bussman put in a three-bet to 59,000, and Seiver cold four-bet to 146,000. Bussman clicked it back, making it 233,000 to go, Seiver moved all in for 736,000, and Bussman called.

Bussmann: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Seiver: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}

The aces held up as the flop, turn, and river came {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{5-Spades}{j-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}, and Seiver was suddenly the top stack in the room.

Four members of Team PokerStars Pro are still alive – Raymond Wu, Jonathan Duhamel, Liv Boeree, and Jason Mercier. The latter three are looking to add another major victory to their poker résumé, while Wu is in search of his second career six-figure score.

Falling just short of Day 4 but busting in the money were, among others, WPT Champions Club member Paul Klann, Big One for One Drop champion Antonio Esfandiari, and 2013 World Series of Poker bracelet winner Marco Johnson.

The bubble burst in Level 16, when Luke Downs moved all in for less than five big blinds with {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}. Perth’s Patrick Healy looked him up from the big blind with {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}, and held as the board ran out {a-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}. From there, dozens of players quickly hit the rail, and were off to collect a min-cash from the cage.

Several players were unable to fight there way into the money, and among the players to exit empty-handed were Dean Schneider, Paul Newey, Jarod Ludemann, Jason Pritchard, Stevan Chew, and Tom Grigg. Ludemann was eliminated in a massive pot where he and Rhys Jones both flopped a set. Unfortunately for Ludemann, Jones’ set of sixes trumped his set of fours, and he was unable to hit quads on the river.

The remaining 36 players will return at 12:15 p.m. local time tomorrow, where they will form six tables of six. The plan is to play until an official final table of six, and those players will enjoy a day off on Saturday.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, It's Been a Pleasure"

Nível 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Antonio Esfandiari
Antonio Esfandiari

We've just lost one of the most entertaining and successful poker players in the world in Antonio Esfandiari. Fittingly, his demise came in a very interesting hand.

It began when action folded to Esfandiari and he said aloud, "Ladies and gentlemen, it's been a pleasure."

He then raised to 105,000, leaving himself just 30,000 behind. Action folded around to local player Rahul Rastogi in the small blind and he eyed up Esfandiari's remaining stack, glanced over at Ami Barer in the big blind, and then announced a raise to 202,000. Much to the surprise of those surrounding the table, Barer then snap-shoved for 410,000.

Rastogi seemed a bit shocked at the sudden turn of events and hit the tank after Esfandiari had caleld off his remaining chips.

"It's a long flight down under," said Esfandiari regarding the long flight he'll have back to the States. At that point Esfandiari got up out of his seat and began to collect his things. Eventually Rastogi folded what he claimed were jacks, and the cards were turned up.

Esfandiari: {6-}{6-}
Barer: {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}

Barer had woken up with a legitimate hand, and that left Esfandiari calling for a six. His optimism was short lived though as the {5-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{a-Spades} flop delivered Barer a set and left "The Magician" in need of running sixes. The {8-Diamonds} turn took away any chance of that happening, and after the {A-Diamonds} was run out on the river, Esfandiari made his way to the payout desk in 42nd place.

"Good luck," Esfandiari offered before departing.

Meanwhile, Bob Trask was eliminated from the tournament in 41st place.

Massive Double for Mizzi Through Juanda

Nível 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Sorel Mizzi
Sorel Mizzi

Sorel Mizzi and John Juanda played a five-bet all-in pot where both players showed down premium pairs.

Unfortunately for Juanda, Mizzi's {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades} dominated his {j-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}, and the board produced all bricks - {7-Spades}{3-Clubs}{10-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}. Mizzi doubled to 905,000 chips, while Juanda fell to 410,000.

Seiver Doubles for 1.5 Million Over Bussmann

Nível 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Scott Seiver
Scott Seiver

Jason Mercier began the action with an opening raise to 16,000 from early position. Scott Seiver was next to act, and flat-called before action folded to Florian Bussmann in the big blind. Bussmann reraised and made it 59,000 to go. Mercier folded to get out of the way, and it was a good thing he did because the fireworks were about to fly.

Seiver opted to reraise, and he made it 146,000. Not to be outdone, Bussmann clicked it back with a min-reraise to 233,000 — another 87,000 more to Seiver. Seiver then moved all in for a total shove of 736,000. Bussmann called, and the cards were on their backs.

Seiver tabled the {A-Spades}{A-Hearts} and had Bussmann's {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} in bad shape. The flop, turn, and river ran out {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{5-Spades}{J-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} to keep Seiver's aces in front and give him the massive pot. Seiver moved to 1.5 million in chips, which was good enough to take the chip lead, while Bussmann was knocked all the way back to a little over 300,000.

JJ for JJ

John Juanda
John Juanda

John Juanda checked to Andreas Lodemel on a flop of {6-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}, and he bet 50,000 into a pot of around 80,000. Juanda made the call.

The turn was the {6-Spades}, Juanda checked again, and Lodemel immediately slid out 100,000. Juanda examined his opponent, reached for chips, and made the call.

The {5-Spades} completed the board, both players quickly checked, and Lodemel showed {4-Spades}{4-Hearts} for sixes and fours. Juanda tabled {j-Clubs}{j-Spades} for jacks and sixes, winning the pot.

Mercier Doubles Through Seiver

Nível 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

From under the gun, Scott Seiver raised to 12,000. Action then folded to Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier in the big blind, and he reraised all in for approximately 120,000. Seiver began to think, and Mercier commented, "Don't do it, Scott." Eventually, Seiver made the call.

Seiver tabled the {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}, and he was up against the {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} for the at-risk Mercier.

The flop, turn, and river ran out {Q-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{2-Diamonds}, and Mercier doubled up to a quarter million. Seiver was clipped back to 600,000 or so.

"Now We're Even"

Nível 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Antonio Esfandiari
Antonio Esfandiari

There was a raise and a call before Antonio Esfandiari three-bet to 31,000 out of the big blind. The original raiser got out of the way, the player in the small blind called, and the dealer fanned {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{5-Hearts}. The player led out for 20,000, Esfandiari called, and the turn was the {k-Diamonds}.

The player slowed down, checking to Esfandiari who took the opportunity to bet 33,000. The bet was good enough to win the Magician the pot, but he was looking for something a little sweeter.

"You want to see?" Esfandiari asked the player, grinning.

He shook his head, but Esfandiari showed him the {8-Spades}{7-Diamonds} anyway.

"Now we're even," the Big One for One Drop champion said.

Análise de Mãos

This interesting hand demonstrates a player (Esfandiari) making a sequence of plays that follow a well-conceived plan from start-to-finish. Read more about the strategy involved here on Learn.PokerNews in "Lessons from the 2014 Aussie Millions: Playing With a Plan."

Dwyer Over 800K

Nível 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Gareth Dwyer
Gareth Dwyer

Prior to the break, Jake Balsiger, Scott Seiver, Heinz Kamutzki, and Gareth Dwyer took a flop of {5-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}. The action checked to Kamutzki, who tossed out 20,000, and only Dwyer called.

The turn was the {4-Spades}, Kamutzki quickly fired out 55,000, and Dwyer quickly called.

A third diamond - the {7-Diamonds} - completed the board, and Kamutzki checked for the first time. Dwyer announced a bet of 70,000, and Kamutzki looked at him quizzically.

Kamutzki asked him if he understood the situation at hand, and Dwyer grinned.

"I never understand," he answered. Dwyer then cited that he makes some mistakes on the felt.

"Is this a mistake?" Kamutzki asked.

"I'm about to see," Dwyer chuckled. "You're getting four-to-one."

Kamutzki finally called, and Dwyer tabled the winning hand - {5-Hearts}{4-Hearts}.

"I wasn't expecting that," the German admitted.
