Willcocks, Mizzi & Dwyer Thrive as 109 Advance from Day 2

Nível 13 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Sorel Mizzi
Sorel Mizzi

The 2014 Aussie Millions Main Event continued on Wednesday as the surviving players from the three starting flights combined into a single field in Crown’s Poker Room. The day began with 355 players, but after six 90-minute levels of play just 109 remained with Phillip Willcocks (510,600), Sorel Mizzi (507,100), and Gareth Dwyer (503,600) topping the counts.

Others who bagged up big stacks were Martin Rowe (463,900), Darren Rabinowitz (368,000), Antonio Esfandiari (349,800), Heinz Kamutzki (336,000), Julian Track (209,100). In addition, Team PokerStars Pros Angel Guillen, Randy Lew, and Jonathan Duhamel all advanced.

We caught up with Duhamel late on Day 2 to see how he was doing. He also offered his thoughts on Joe Hachem’s belief that recent World Series of Poker Main Event champs haven’t lived up to their responsibilities.

Nine players took advantage of the late registration, which brought the total number of entries up to 668 – the biggest turnout in the last three years! That created a prize pool of AUD$6.68 million, which will be distributed to the top 72 players with the eventual winner receiving a smooth AUD$1.6 million.

One player to late register was Gus Hansen, who won the Aussie Millions back in 2007. Hansen got off to a quick start by doubling his stack, but he was eliminated shortly thereafter. Likewise, 2004 Aussie Millions champ Tony Bloom fell early on Day 2.

In Level 8 (400/800/100), Full Tilt Poker Ambassador Tom Grigg opened for 1,800 only to have "King" Dan Smith, who won the $100,000 Challenge here two years back, three-bet to 4,600. Not to be outdone, Grigg four-bet to 10,200 and then called when Smith five-bet all in for roughly 40,000.

Grigg: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Smith: {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs}

It was a classic race, and according to the PokerNews Odds Calculator Smith was a slight 56.65% favorite while Grigg would score the elimination 42.95% of the time. The {2-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{3-Spades} flop was safe for Smith, and he pulled out to a 3-1 lead. Unfortunately for him, that is when the dealer burned and turned the {A-Diamonds}. Grigg paired his ace to become a massive 95.45% favorite, which meant Smith needed to catch a jack and a jack only to survive. He had a 4.55% chance of doing it, but in this particular hand it didn't come as the {10-Spades} blanked on the river.

As the day progressed many others fell including Joe Hachem, Sam Cohen, Philipp Gruissem, Barry Woods, Elliot Smith, Ana-Maria Cosma, Andrew Hinrichsen, Liam O'Rourke, Viktor "Isildur1" Blom, Patrik Antonius, and Billy "The Croc" Argyros.

While hundreds fell, some notables managed to punch their ticket to Day 3 including Mike Watson (149,200), Jarod Ludemann (91,500), Annette Obrestad (87,100), Marco Johnson (81,500), Paul Klann (64,400), and Paul Newey (47,200).

Day 3 is set to begin at 12:15 local time, and the plan is to play six more 90-minute levels. During that time the money bubble will burst and the field will be reduced to approximately 30 players. Of course the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand to bring you all the action, so be sure to check back then.

In the meantime, have a look at Kristy Arnett’s interview with Patrik Antonius, who was one of many Day 2 casualties:

Liv Boeree
Liv Boeree

Liv Boeree opened to 5,000 from under the gun, Antonio Tartaglia three-bet to 14,100 on the button, and both blinds released. Boeree made the call, both players checked on a flop of {6-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}, and the turn brought the {10-Clubs}.

Boeree led out for 13,000, Tartaglia called, and the {10-Diamonds} repeated on the river. Boeree led out again, firing a bet of 35,000, and Tartaglia folded {a-Clubs}{k-Spades} face up.

The Team PokerStars Pro slid her cards into the much facedown, and pulled in the pot.

The Croc Gets Swallowed Up

Nível 12 : 1,000/2,000, 3,000 ante
Billy Argyros
Billy Argyros

We happened by Table 32 and discovered Billy "The Croc" Argyros was all in for 20,700. His opponent, Team Online's Randy Lew, had 10,300 out in front of him and was debating whether or not he wanted to call the additional 10,400. He decided that he did and the cards were turned up.

Argyros: {a-Spades}{j-Hearts}
Lew: {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}

Argyros got it in good, but there was a king in the window when the flop came out {2-Clubs}{3-Spades}{k-Clubs}. Neither the {J-Diamonds} turn nor {4-Spades} river helped "The Croc," and he wished the table luck before taking his leave from the tournament.

Juanda Busts McKenzie

Nível 11 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Jesse McKenzie - Eliminated
Jesse McKenzie - Eliminated

John Juanda has just eliminated Jesse "OnTheMac" McKenzie after flopping bottom set against the Aussie's top-pair top-kicked.

We picked up the action on the turn on a board reading {7-Clubs}{k-Spades}{9-Clubs}{2-Hearts} when McKenzie bet 8,200 from the small blind and Juanda called from middle position. When the {8-Spades} completed the board on the river, McKenzie checked and Juanda moved all in. McKenzie had about 25,000 behind and snap-called off.

Juanda tabled the {7-Hearts}{7-Spades} for a set, and it was good against McKenzie's {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}.

Fare Thee Well O'Rourke

Nível 11 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Liam O'Rourke
Liam O'Rourke

Liam O'Rourke's 2014 Aussie Millions Main Event has come to an end courtesy of Jamie Beer.

In the first of two hands between the duo, O'Rourke rivered a flush holding the {j-Hearts}{10-Hearts}. Unfortunately for him Beer had rivered a bigger one with the {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}.

That left O'Rourke on a short stack, and he got it in soon after with the {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} and was up against Beer's {8-}{8-}. The pocket pair held and that was all she wrote for O'Rourke.

Nistas In the Danger Zone

Nível 11 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Jimmy Nistas
Jimmy Nistas

Jimmy Nistas entered the day as one of our leaders, but after losing a series of pots he is captaining a starting stack of 30,000.

On the hand we witnessed, Nistas was faced with a raise to 3,500 from a player in early position. From the small blind, he three-bet to 9,000, and the player called. Both players knuckled on a flop of {7-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}, the turn was the {3-Clubs}, and Nistas checked again.

The player tossed out a single T5,000 chip, Nistas matched it, and the {j-Diamonds} completed the board. Nistas begrudgingly check-called a bet of 12,000, then threw his hands into the air in disgust when the player showed {q-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for a rivered flush.

An Orbit w/ Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier has been quite active today, which is why we selected him to be the next pro featured in "An Orbit With." Unfortunately things weren't quite a exciting as we hoped.

Hand #1 (Button): A player in early position opened for 2,700 and action folded to Mercier, who three-bet to 7,000. The blinds both folded and then the original raiser did the same.

Hand #2 (Cutoff): A player in middle position opened for 2,500, Wai Kin Yong called from the hijack, and Mercier folded.

Hand #3 (Hijack): A middle-position player raised to 2,500 and Mercier folded.

Hand #4 (Middle Position): Mercier opened the action with a raise to 2,400 and received calls from the button and big blind. All three players checked, the {8-Clubs} turn, and the big blind led out for 4,000. Mercier folded.

Hand #5 (UTG+1): Wai Kin Yong opened for 2,500 and Mercier folded.

Hand #6 (Under the Gun): Mercier folded from the under-the-gun position.

Hand #7 (Big Blind): A player in middle position limped and action folded to Mercier, who checked his option from the big blind. Mercier checked the {k-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{q-Spades} flop and then folded when his opponent bet 2,600.

Hand #8 (Small Blind): Wai Kin Yong raised to 2,500 from the button, Mercier called, and the big blind came along to make it three-way action to the {5-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{7-Clubs} flop, which all three players checked. After the dealer burned and turned the {J-Diamonds}, Mercier led out for 6,500 and both his opponents folded.

Antonius' Aces Cracked

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Patrik Antonius
Patrik Antonius

Heinz Kamutzki raised to 2,600, Patrik Antonius three-bet to 6,500, and a third player cold four-bet to 12,600. Kamutzki got out of the way, Antonius moved all in for effectively 49,000, and the player called.

Antonius: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}
Opponent: {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}

Antonius held a commanding lead, but the flop fell {3-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{k-Spades}, giving his opponent two pair. Antonius needed to hit an ace, three, or running straight/pair cards to catch up, but the turn and river bricked {2-Hearts}, {5-Hearts} respectively.

After getting his aces cracked, Antonius dropped to 64,000 chips.

Ana-Maria Cosma
Ana-Maria Cosma

According to Team PokerStars Online member Randy Lew, Ana-Maria Cosma received a five-minute penalty for turning on her phone in an interesting way in the middle of a hand.

Randy LewA girl at my table was in a hand and got a 5 minute penalty for touching her phone and lighting it up with her breast lol , btw I have 90k

Cosma protested the penalty, highlighting the ridiculousness of the act, but ultimately had to sit out for five minutes.
