Phil Ivey Wins Second Aussie Millions $250,000 Challenge Title (AU$4,000,000)!

Nível 19 : 80,000/160,000, 20,000 ante
Champion Phil Ivey!
Champion Phil Ivey!

Back in early 2012, Phil Ivey stormed back onto the tournament scene with a big victory in the Aussie Millions $250,000 Challenge. Now, for the second time, Ivey has taken the title in the event, but this time he pocketed double what he did two years ago by banking AU$4,000,000 — his largest single career score.

Ivey was one of 46 entries in this record-setting event, and he was one of the players to fire only one AU$250,000 bullet. Heading into Day 2, Ivey was seventh overall in chips with 622,000. He never really dropped much lower than that and entered the eight-handed televised final table seventh with 976,000, albeit this time it meant he was second to last in chips. From there, Ivey did well to battle his way back into the mix.

Max Altergott became the first elimination of the televised final table in eighth place, and his elimination meant the players were now on a big AU$500,000 bubble. Unfortunately for Erik Seidel, he would be the man that burst the bubble with his bust out in seventh place.

During Level 14 with the blinds at 25,000/50,000/5,000, Seidel was all in for around 15 big blinds with the {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}. He was dominated by the {K-Clubs}{K-Spades} for Fabian Quoss. The kings for Quoss held up following a board of {Q-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{2-Spades}, and the remaining six players locked up a payday of at least half a million Australian dollars.

From there, Tom Dwan fell in sixth place (AU$500,000), Quoss hit the rail in fifth place (AU$800,000), Daniel Negreanu was eliminated in fourth place (AU$1,250,000), and Mike McDonald busted in third place (AU$1,900,000) to leave Ivey heads up with Isaac Haxton. Interestingly, both Negreanu and McDonald were in this event for three bullets and were able to pull out a profit.

Haxton, on the other hand, was trying to get unstuck from his entire 2014 Aussie Millions and did so. In fact, he did very well for himself by finishing runner-up for AU$2,820,000. Haxton played the $25,000 Challenge and the Main Event, but busted both, and then fired six bullets in the $100,000 Challenge and two bullets in this event for a total of AU$1,160,000 in buy-ins.

When heads-up play began, Haxton had the lead with 6.15 million to Ivey's 5.35 million. Haxton immediately began to extend his lead and even had Ivey down to around the two million mark. Ivey fought back, though, and even found a nice double up during Level 18 with the blinds at 60,000/120,000/10,000 thanks to a full house. Then, he nearly doubled right after, but Haxton was able to find a gutshot on the river to chop the pot.

It was at that point that Ivey looked to really get into the zone. He began chipping up and eventually took the lead thanks to a monster pot sent his way during Level 19 with the blinds at 80,000/160,000/20,000 that knocked Haxton under three million. Things didn't take too long after that.

On the final hand, Ivey limped the button for 160,000, and Haxton raised all in from the big blind. Ivey got the count, then called with the {A-Hearts}{6-Clubs}. Haxton tabled the {8-Spades}{7-Diamonds}. The {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{7-Spades}{3-Spades} board sealed the deal for Ivey and eliminated Haxton in second place. Ivey took home AU$4,000,000 in winnings to move over $20,000,000 in total lifetime tournament earnings. Ivey also became the first two-time winner of this event, which is quite the feat given the event has only been run four times now. With the victory, Ivey also moved into second place on poker's all-time money list.

With that, the 2014 Aussie Millions has come to a close. It was a great festival from Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia, and we can't wait to be back here again next year to do it all over again. Until then, you can find us at the bar!

As always, thanks for following along.

Isaac Haxton Eliminated in 2nd Place (AU$2,820,000)

Phil Ivey limped in from the button, and Isaac Haxton raised all in from the big blind. Ivey got the count, then called with the {A-Hearts}{6-Clubs}, Haxton tabled the {8-Spades}{7-Diamonds}.

The flop came down {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{9-Clubs}, and Ivey improved to a pair of aces. The turn provided a nice, little sweat with the {7-Spades} pairing Haxton and leaving him needing another seven or an eight on the river to double up.

The river completed the board with the {3-Spades}, and that was it. Haxton was eliminated in second place for AU$2,820,000, and Ivey was crowned the winner for a massive AU$4,000,000 payday.

On the button, Isaac Haxton raised to 265,000. Phil Ivey made the call from the big blind, and the flop came down {5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{2-Spades}. Ivey checked, and Haxton bet 265,000. Ivey check-raised to 650,000, and then Haxton moved all in. Ivey quickly made the call and tabled the {5-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} for top two pair. Haxton showed an open-ended straight draw with the {7-Diamonds}{6-Spades}.

The turn was the {5-Spades} to give Ivey a full house and secure him the double up. The river completed the board with the {3-Spades}.

Mike McDonald - 3rd Place
Mike McDonald - 3rd Place

Mike McDonald moved all in from the small blind, and Isaac Haxton called from the big blind. McDonald was the player at risk with the {10-Diamonds}{8-Spades}, and Haxton had the {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}. The flop, turn, and river ran out {6-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}, and McDonald fell in third place.

McDonald took home AU$1,900,000 for his finish and was able to profit AU$1,150,000 after firing three bullets similar to Daniel Negreanu for a total of AU$750,000 in buy-ins to this event. What's more is that McDonald finished runner-up in the $100,000 Challenge just a couple days ago for AU$1,500,000 to put his total take at AU$3,400,000.

Daniel Negreanu Eliminated in 4th Place (AU$1,250,000)

Daniel Negreanu - 4th Place
Daniel Negreanu - 4th Place

From the small blind, Daniel Negreanu raised all in. Phil Ivey made the quick call from the big blind with the {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}, and he was dominating the {A-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} for the at-risk Negreanu.

The flop vaulted Negreanu into the lead when the {10-Hearts}{6-Spades}{2-Spades} fell. The turn did give Ivey some more outs to now come from behind when the {J-Spades} fell, and then the {K-Clubs} completed the board on the river. Ivey finished with a better pair — a pair of kings — and Negreanu was eliminated in fourth place for AU$1,250,000. With Negreanu being in this event for three bullets worth a total of AU$750,000, he profited AU$500,000.

McDonald Triples; Negreanu Takes Chip Lead

Nível 17 : 50,000/100,000, 10,000 ante
McDonald all smiles after tripling

From under the gun, a newly-crippled Mike "Timex" McDonald moved all in for 175,000. After Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu called from the small blind, Phil Ivey raised to 450,000 out of the big blind. Negreanu called and checked in the dark before the dealer spread the {8-Spades}{6-Hearts}{2-Clubs} flop. Ivey bet 500,000, and Negreanu called.

The turn was the {7-Diamonds}, and Negreanu and Ivey checked. Then, the river completed the board with the {J-Spades}. Negreanu and Ivey checked again.

Negreanu tabled the {5-Hearts}{5-Spades} for a pair of fives after announcing a single pair. Ivey showed what looked to be {A-}{9-}, but it was quickly mucked. McDonald showed the {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} for pocket kings.

Negreanu won the side pot, which was good enough to move him into the chip lead ahead of Ivey, and then McDonald scooped the main pot to more than triple his stack.

Action folded to Mike McDonald in the small blind, and he raised all in against Isaac Haxton's big blind. Haxton thought about it, then called, and tabled the {A-Clubs}{6-Clubs}. McDonald had the {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and was all in for around 1.6 million, and Haxton had him covered.

The flop, turn, and river ran out {7-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds}, and McDonald finished with a flush to double up.

Fabian Quoss raised to 175,000 on the button, Phil Ivey three-bet to 530,000 out of the small blind, and Quoss tanked for a but before moving all in for an addition 880,000. Ivey flashed a smile, then called.

Quoss: {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds}
Ivey: {k-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}

The German remained ahead after the flop ({5-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}) and the turn ({a-Hearts}), but the {k-Hearts} spiked on the river to give Ivey a pair of kings.

Ivey shipped the pot, while Quoss earns AU$800,000 for fifth place.

Tom Dwan Eliminated in 6th Place (AU$500,000)

Nível 15 : 30,000/60,000, 5,000 ante
Tom Dwan - 6th Place
Tom Dwan - 6th Place

After PokerStars Team Online's Isaac Haxton raised to 140,000, Tom Dwan reraised all in for around 400,000. Haxton made the call, and it was off to the races for these two with Dwan at risk holding the {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}. Haxton had two suited over cards in the {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts}.

The flop paired Haxton when the {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{7-Spades} fell. The turn was the {J-Diamonds} and improved Haxton to two pair, which meant Dwan needed an eight on the river to stay alive.

The {6-Hearts} on fifth street couldn't do it, though, and Dwan was out in sixth place for AU$500,000. Finishing in the money and earning that score netted Dwan the largest payday of his live tournament poker career. Previously, his largest live result was for $381,885.
